CLASS OF 2015 INDUCTEE
SHANNON CAMPBELL BECOMES FIRST
THREE TIME KING AT KING OF THE HAMMERS
2015 Rising Star Wayland Campbell finishes second by 28 seconds!

The father and son duo of 2015 Inductee Shannon Campbell, and his son, 2015 Rising Star Wayland Campbell, proved to be a formidable force at King of the Hammers this year. Wayland was first across the finish line, but his dad's push to the finish on a cracked rim and three tires, one of them flat, gave him the win on adjusted time.

Not only did Shannon and Wayland
finish one-two in the brutal main race, but they also finished one-two in the UTV class held earlier in the week. Hall of Fame worthy accomplishments indeed.
Shannon Campbell takes the checkered flag, minus a driver front tire.

King of the Hammers is the flagship race of the Ultra4 Racing series. Founded by ORMHOF board member Dave Cole, the event has grown in size and status since the first race eleven years ago. The event creates a city of nearly 50,000 race fans in the southern California desert, dubbed "Hammertown," with visitors from around the world, including celebrities and mainstream press. Look for Ultra4 Racing on TV later this year; we'll be sure to post the dates in an upcoming newsletter.

I started my off-road driving career in 1988, at Four Wheeler magazine. I longed to participate in the Biggest of the 4 x 4 Adventures. In 1995, I was blessed to be a participating journalist on the first Camel Trophy team that included women the U.S. ORMHOF inductee Mark A. Smith, who I had met on the Jeep Jamboree trail, called Tom Collins, team trainer and set in place the opportunity for me to try out for my first of four grueling 1,000-mile-long 4WD forays; here I am at the end of my first Camel Trophy that traversed 5 Central American countries. Next was Borneo, followed by Mongolia and South America, from Santiago to Tierra del Fuego. Other Land Rover adventures took me to 36 countries.

At the same time, I wanted to experience extreme 4WD adventure, and Mark A. Smith called ORMHOF's Rod Hall on my behalf.  Rod treated me with the deepest respect  and allowed me to come to Reno to "train" to be his co-driver for the 1995 Baja 1000.

I spent 12 hours with Rod that were life-changing during the race. Starting out on
the "whoops" in the Hummer H1, I couldn't imagine why anyone in their right mind participated in this sport!  By the finish  12 hours later, I was hooked!

After training with Darren Skilton for almost a year and completing the 2000 Paris-Dakar Rally in Africa with him as a co-driver, I put it on my bucket list to be the Driver-of-Record in a Dakar Rally. For my 60th birthday, my dream came true and I not only competed with Skilton as my co-driver and team manager, but I won the Open Production class of the 2011 Dakar Rally. ORMHOF inductee Chris Collard was our media manager and the rest became history!

SHELBY HALL DEBUTS AS DRIVER OF RECORD AT THE 2017 MINT 400
ORMHOF Inductee and Board Member Rod Hall waves to the crowd during the 2016 Mint 400 parade, where he was honored as Grand Marshal. Driving the iconic 1968 Ford Bronco is Carrie Woodward of BFGoodrich Tires, an ORMHOF Industry Partner.

When the green flag waves off the Vintage Class of the 2017 Mint 400, a new era will begin for a family revered for its longevity and accomplishments in the off-road racing world. As Shelby Hall, of Reno, Nevada, takes the start of The Great American Off-Road Race in the 1968 Ford Bronco, it will mark the beginning of her racing career as the Driver of Record and, for the first time, without any members of her famed family on her team.  Her grandfather, the legendary Rod Hall, who has been awaiting this day for many years, will be at the Mint to cheer her on.
Co-driving at The Mint 400 with Shelby will be Amy Lerner. The two first competed together at the 2016 Rebelle Rally, where they finished in 4th place, out of 33 finishing teams.

Shelby has also taken the helm at Team Hall Drive, and adventure experience company based out of Reno, Nevada.

Read more about Amy and Shelby, including the full press release, in this great article by Dan McGee over at Nevada Racing News.
