"Take Care to Give Care"

November is National Family Caregivers Month. This year the theme for National Family Caregivers Month is "Take Care to Give Care", which is a good reminder that the first rule of taking care of others, is to take care of yourself first. The Parkinson Association would like to give thanks for all of the care partners who give day in and day out to support their partners mentally, emotionally and physically. On behalf of the  Caregiver Action Network , here are a few reminders to  pay attention to your own needs and remember y ou really do need to "take care to give care!"
  • Caregiving can be a stressful job. Most family caregivers say they feel stressed providing care for a loved one. With all of their caregiving responsibilities - from managing medications to arranging doctor appointments to planning meals - caregivers too often put themselves last.
  • The stress of caregiving impacts your own health. One out of five caregivers admit they have sacrificed their own physical health while caring for a loved one. Due to stress, family caregivers have a disproportionate number of health and emotional problems. They are twice as likely to suffer depression and are at increased risk for many other chronic conditions.
  • Proper nutrition helps promote good health. Ensuring that you are getting proper nutrition is key to help maintain your strength, energy and stamina, as well as strengthening your immune system. Maintaining a healthy diet is one of the most powerful things you can do to take care of yourself and keep a positive attitude overall.
  • Ensuring good nutrition for your loved one helps make care easier. As many as half of all older adults are at risk for malnutrition. Good nutrition can help maintain muscle health, support recovery, and reduce risk for re-hospitalization - which may help make your care of a loved one easier.
  • Remember: "Rest. Recharge. Respite." People think of respite as a luxury, but considering caregivers' higher risk for health issues from chronic stress, those risks can be a lot costlier than some time away to recharge. The chance to take a breather, the opportunity to re-energize, is vital in order for you to be as good a caregiver tomorrow as you were today.
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 6th as a reminder to support our  community through Colorado's Annual Day of Online Giving! You have 24 hours to give where  you live to support nonprofits like ours.

This unique opportunity allows you to give to your favorite, approved Colorado Gives Day charities through the Colorado Gives  websiteWith your supp ort you can help us celebrate our 35th Anniversary by helping us reach our goal of raising over $35,000 in 24 hours! Plus, when you give online any time on December 6th - through the support of Colorado Gives Day partners, Community First Foundation and First Bank, all credit card and processing fees will be covered and the value of your donation will be increased by the one million dollar incentive fund.

Worried you'll forget?  Click to preschedule your gift today!  All charges will be processed on December 6th to "give where you live!"

Lewy Body Dementia Research Study
A new clinical trial for dementia with Lewy bodies is open and enrolling patients now.

This trial is testing an investigational medication that may help cognition (thinking skills) and  performance of daily living activities in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies.

To be considered for the HEADWAY-DLB program, participants must:
  • Have a diagnosis of dementia with Lewy bodies for at least 2 months
  • Be between 50 and 85 years of age
  • Be accompanied by a caregiver or study partner who is willing to oversee the participant's involvement in this clinical research study and provide information about how the participant is doing throughout the study
  • Patients currently receiving therapy for DLB are eligible for enrollment and in most cases can stay on their existing treatment
For more information, click here to learn about this trial, find a trial site near you and take  the study prescreener to see if you or the person you know may be eligible.
