Part V

The Great Cholesterol Con:
The Dangers of Cholesterol-Lowering Medications

Before 2004, when cholesterol had not yet become a super villain in the medical community  and households nation-wide, a 130-milligram LDL cholesterol level was considered healthy.  However, in 2004 the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) panel advised those at risk for heart disease to attempt to reduce their LDL cholesterol to specific, very low levels of less than 100, and less than 70 for patients deemed very high risk.  The latest recommendations state that cholesterol levels in the body should be as low as possible; so low in fact, that traditional cholesterol-lowering lifestyle modifications alone, such as diet and exercise, cannot possibly achieve them.

What lifestyle change CAN help "at risk" individuals reach these excessively low guidelines?  If the new levels cannot be attained by diet and exercise alone, the NCEP panel asserts that cholesterol-lowering drugs, particularly the so-called "statins," should then be given to those individuals at high risk for heart disease.  Since heart disease is the number one killer in this country that would include most adults - and even many children.

So how did these excessively low cholesterol guidelines come about?  And how are statins detrimental to your heart and overall health?

Recipe of the Week

Fire Cider Tonic

Fire Cider is essentially spruced up Apple Cider Vinegar tonic, which works hard to reduce inflammation and alleviate uncomfortable bloating by aiding digestion and immune support.

In the body, this miracle tonic functions in the same way stomach acid or acid supplements do, but in a milder form.  The vinegar lends both bitterness - which stimulates the release of saliva to begin breaking down carbohydrates in the mouth - and acidity - which facilitates the breakdown of proteins in the stomach and signals other important digestion chemicals and hormones to be released and further aid in the process.

Fire cider is also great because it can be used not only as a digestive aid, but as general immune support. It has lots of antibacterial properties from garlic (as well as drainage in the body's detox pathways), vitamin C from lemons and limes, the benefits of raw apple cider vinegar, the prebiotics of onion and ginger, and the kick of cayenne. It also works wonders on colds. It's such an amazing food-based powerhouse.

Ingredients

(Makes 1/4 cup - 1/2 cup)

  • 1/4 red onion
  • 2 inches ginger root (peeled)
  • 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • dash cayenne pepper
  • 1 lime
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 cloves garlic

Special equipment

  • Vitamix or other High-Powered Blender/Pulverizer

Directions

In blender, add onion and 1 inch of ginger root. Next, add apple cider vinegar, cayenne, the juice from the lemon and lime, 1 inch ginger, and garlic. Stir. To serve, add 1/2 tablespoon Homemade Fire Cider Tonic to 1 tablespoon of water. Store in the refrigerator, up to 18 months.
