Pathway to employment
A job is so much more than a paycheck. It's about learning new skills, challenging yourself, contributing to your community and feeling a sense of pride and independence. Yet for many jobseekers with disabilities, it's hard to know where to begin on the path to employment.

Pine Tree Society's day program has begun offering Career Exploration Workshops to help participants set vocational goals and work toward a bright future, one step at a time. Led by Pine Tree Society's Lillian Scenna, LSW, the series of workshops is designed to help individuals discover their innate interests and abilities as they prepare to enter the workforce.

"We're inspired every day by the energy and ambition of our day program participants," said Lillian. "These men and women have incredible gifts that bring strength and diversity to the workforce. It's exciting to watch them learn and grow and become more confident in their abilities."

Participant Rob Fairbrother left the workshop with a better understanding of the strengths he can bring to any workplace. He proudly said, "I'm a team player. I'm hardworking and trustworthy. And I'm always willing to learn new skills." Another participant, Shelly Schwieterman, discovered that she learns best by example. "After somebody shows me how to do something, I am good to go," she said. "I'm a fast learner."

Workshop participants proudly show off their "Strengths Chain" - an activity that helps each individual identify his or her own work strengths. When connected together, the chain becomes a powerful visual tool of what can be accomplished as a team.
