Welcome to Pulse Center for Patient Safety Education & Advocacy
Raising awareness about patient safety through advocacy, education & support
Since 1996

As we welcome in the new year we hope to make Pulse CPSEA more interactive and more about YOU!  Consider how to become part of our growing community! There may be many changes this year as we work hard to reach more people, make more improvements and continue to be part of the solution to improving patient's safety.
News in Patient Safety
By Ilene Corina, President Pulse CPSEA

2015 saw an estimated 21 percent decline in hospital-acquired conditions (HACS)  compared to 2010, according to a recent report. The same report calculates that nearly 125,000 fewer patients died in the hospital as a result of HACs, and that approximately $28 billion in health care costs were saved from 2010 to 2015 due to the reductions in HACs.

Now we're talking!

I was invited by The Partnership for Patients  to the 2016 CMS Quality Conference where they discussed the release of the report that hospital acquired conditions have declined:  See

This is an important breakthrough because now we aren't talking about deaths and injuries, which scare people; now we can talk about lives being saved. Thanks to the voices of patients and families working with government leadership, we have made tremendous progress.  Obviously, we still have a long way to go.  We want every patient who is getting treated by the healthcare system to have the best outcomes possible. Yet most people are not aware of what is being done at this level. We must bring this conversation home - and to every bedside - to be sure we are talking about patient safety.

What do you think of this?  Do you have a story to share?  Visit us on Facebook where we are always looking for solutions.  What has worked for you or your family?

Spring Symposium
Infection Prevention: It begins with you!!

Registration opens this month for the Pulse CPSEA 2017 Annual Spring Symposium, Infection Prevention: It Begins With You! To be held Monday, May 1, 2017 at the Holiday Inn, Plainview, NY.

Despite the good progress that we reported above in preventing hospital-acquired conditions, infections picked up during treatment are still among the most dangerous risks faced by hospital and clinic patients. Most infections can be prevented by strict adherence to the protocols in place, so this is an area in which the vigilance of families, professional advocates, and patients themselves can play a decisive role. The Symposium will bring together high caliber speakers, healthcare professionals and members of the community to discuss the latest efforts to reduce infections.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, as well as group rates, partnerships and scholarships.  Stay tuned for more information!

Do you have an experience with an infection that was un-diagnosed, misdiagnosed, or could have had a different outcome "If I only knew then what I know now?"  You can share your story by contacting Ilene Corina at icorina@pulsecenterforpatientsafety.org
