Patterson Library On the Move!

Circulation Clerks Denise and Robin are bringing the Patterson Library on the road to Clover Lake, a local senior housing facility in Patterson. Twice monthly, they load up their cars and bring an array of books, movies, CDs, and other items to the wonderful seniors who eagerly await their arrival. Both Denise and Robin look forward to the visits with their "Senior Friends" and are happy at the success of the popular program noting increases in the number of residents participating, borrowing materials and obtaining new library cards with each visit.

Seniors aren't the only ones to receive Outreach Services from the Patterson Library. Our Youth Services Coordinator, Ellen Clancy, also known as "Mrs. C", helps spread the love of reading to local preschool children by travelling to the Hudson Valley Cerebral Palsy Association's and Putnam Head Start's Preschools. Mrs. C hosts monthly storytimes at the HV CPA Preschool where classes gather to hear stories and select books to borrow. In addition she visits the Head Start Preschool to read stories and works with them to host Literacy Family Nights at the library to help promote reading and language skills for parents and children.

Celebrating National Poetry Month

Patterson Library is celebrating National Poetry Month in April with a series of fun events. Local students in grades 7-12 submitted poems for consideration in a juried event made possible in part by a grant from the Putnam Arts Council. Inspired by Tony Howarth, a local poet, playwright and high school teacher, the contest will offer cash prizes, donated by Mr. Howarth for the top three poems to recognize the value of the teen's poetic work. The poems will be on display at the library through the month of April and a reading of the submissions will take place at a poetry celebration at the end of the month. Winners of the contest will be announced at the event to be emceed by Neil Silberblatt, Pushcart prize-nominated poet and founder of the Facebook group "Voices of Poetry."
