Each one of us in the Body of Christ is gifted. A big part of my understanding of my call in the church is helping others to fully live into their gifts. (Click on my bio if you want to learn more about my call and background.) Think on your gifts today. Ask yourself how fully engaging those gifts in the ministry of your church would be living our common prayer that "God's kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven."

If you are interested in exploring your gifts or even discovering more about yourself and your call to the ministry and mission of your local church, set up a meeting today with your local pastor. Through that conversation, you can get connected to local church ministries, association ministry opportunities and even wider church ministry with the conference or national church. I am also working on building an on-line learning experience to engage in spiritual growth and development toward living our faith out loud and outside the walls of our church buildings.I welcome your input on this planning for a wider church conversation through the completion of this on-line survey.

At the core of conference ministry for me is encouraging the Church to strive for healthy ministry in all her settings, large and small, traditional and newly birthed, and I am really excited that the Penn Central Conference is hosting the Rev. Dr. Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi on Saturday, October 28th at Mt. Zion in York. She will be talking with us about vitality, especially small church vitality. She will look at links between vitality, spirituality and mission. Rev. Dr. Lizardy-Hajbi will also lead a workshop on the "Be the Church" slogans and how to live them out through the passion inspired mission of your church. What would it look like for your church to "forgive often" or to "share earthly and spiritual resources?" Register for our keynote and workshop on October 28 to learn more!

Another opportunity for working toward healthy ministry is our Lay Boundary Awareness program. I am part of the team that will lead this event twice in 2018: March 3 and October 20. Following our first Healthy Boundaries, Healthy Churches event in 2017, feedback insisted that this training for lay leaders and pastors be repeated often. By inviting clear communication and sharing of leadership gifts and expectations, churches can move toward more healthy environments for ministry. This is a complimentary program to the boundary training for pastors that has been in place for several years.

Speaking of being in place for several years, Boundary Awareness Training for Clergy has a new curriculum. One thing was made clear to me upon arrival in Penn Central and that was to really spice up and change the face of boundary training for clergy. Establishing Boundary Basics is still required for those just entering ministry, but for the advanced credit hours needed, I have developed 2-hour topical credits that are offered regularly throughout the calendar year. This invites clergy to attend one session each year to stay on the 6-credits every three year cycle. Remaining events in this calendar year include the brand-new Healthy Practices in the Third-Third for retired clergy on October 18 and November 16 and one more Advanced Session on November 11. As part of my practice of ministry, I have been involved in a Clergy Community of Practice with other ACMs across the denomination since 2012. I cannot say enough about how this collegial group has informed my work and ministry or how they have sustained me in times of crisis or despair. All clergy are encouraged to be part of small groups that offer peer support like this. Statistics prove that these small groups reduce turnover and lead to healthy habits of ministry over a career. We have existing ministeriums that may meet this need. We are also beginning Clergy Communities of Practice. These groups provide intentional, covenanted space for the sharing of how clergy engage their ministerial gifts in the everyday practice of pastoral leadership. Through worship together, personal check-in time and discussion of a case-study, clergy are invited to offer care, support and accountability to one another while nurturing practices of spiritual discipline and further development of their vocation and craft in a covenantal setting. Those interested in more information on your local ministerium meeting or these forming Communities of Practice, contact me.

2018 UCC Medical and Dental Rates

Big Gifts Small Packages: Church Vitality in Small Churches is a workshop about healthy churches.

"God has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

What if we talked about church vitality with this teaching from the prophet Micah instead of measuring our vitality by the numbers?

Rev. Dr. Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi, Director of the UCC's Center for Analytics, Research and Data will invite us to do that as she shares her passion for church vitality through a discipleship lens on October 28^th at Mt. Zion in York. She will offer a keynote address on small church vitality and following lunch will lead a workshop on the Mission Planning Process using the "Be the Church" resource and slogans. Our day together will begin at 9:30 with check-in, coffee and fellowship and will wind down around 3. Lunch is included in the cost of registration.

Check-in on October 28 will begin at 9:30. Devotions will be at 10:00 and the keynote will begin at 10:30. The event should run until 3:00.

The cost is $15 per person. Church groups of 3 or more will be $12 per person. Lunch is included.

Spirit on Tap: The Reformation at 500 and Beyond

Spirit on Tap - October 31 at 7:00 with Dr. Jane Ellingwood

The Reformation at 500 and Beyond

Dr. Ellingwood's presentation will show how Reformation ideas about grace, faith, and works have influenced our contemporary theology, and which beliefs need to be reinterpreted or abandoned in the 21st century. Ideas about Creation held by Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other Reformers will be explored in terms of God's grace extending not only to all peoples and all nations, but also to all living creatures and all creation.

Clergy and Congregation Care Workshop

A congregation's expectations of clergy and church leaders are often greater than their capacity to fulfill them. When too much focus and expectation is placed on the clergy and a few top leaders, sustainability is not possible long-term. Scripture speaks of the leadership's role of "equipping the saints." If clergy and church leaders have a top priority of developing others, they will use a coaching approach to continually develop the potential in other congregants, resulting in a growing pool of leaders.

Boundary/Leadership Training

Training for Our Whole Lives

Training for Our Whole Lives, a series of sexuality education programs developed jointly by the UCC and UUA, will come to the Lancaster Association on October 27-29, 2017.

Church of the Apostles in Lancaster will host the weekend-long event, which will cover training needed to lead education programs for grades 7-9 and 10-12. The training will begin at approximately 5:30pm on Friday 10/27 (registration opens at 4pm, and supper will be served at 5pm), and run through approximately 2:30pm on Sunday 10/29. The registration fee of $250 (postmarked by September 30) or $300 (postmarked after September 30) per person will cover instruction and all meals from Friday supper through Sunday lunch, but will not include course textbooks or lodging.

In order to be certified as a workshop educator, participants must attend the ENTIRE training, without exception. Because of this, participants who live more than 15 minutes from Church of the Apostles (1850 Marietta Ave, 17603) will be required to lodge in Lancaster instead of commuting from home, as our sessions will begin as early as 7am and run as late as 10pm.

Our Whole Lives helps individuals make informed and responsible decisions about their relationships, health, and behavior in the context of their faith. The creation of the OWL curriculum was a direct response to General Synod actions calling for the development of sexuality education materials for all ages. Retired Boundary Training

2 sessions of "Healthy Practices in the Third-Third: Boundary Awareness in Retirement" will be held this Fall.

October 18 at Christ, Elizabethtown

November 16 at St. John's in Lewisburg

9:30 - 12:00

This training will count toward your association's Boundary Training requirement.

Come explore topics around vocation and identity as well as look at some of the logistics of leaving well and in some cases becoming a member instead of the pastor. With much of the expertise already in the room, we anticipate lively discussion of life in real-world retirement and how we navigate the blessings and challenges of this time in our lives.

Church Vitality

Would You Like a Mystery Visitor to Come to Your Church?

The conference has trained 12 Mystery Visitors who are willing to visit your church on Sunday morning and give you a detailed report. Pastors can request a visitor (and they are the only ones allowed to do so) and they will receive the report to do with it as they see fit.

These visitors will assess the website, curb appeal and hospitality (as well as the coffee!). They will not be evaluating the pastor or the service itself. While most of the mystery visitors are churched, we also have a few seekers. To request a mystery visitor, contact Laurene Bowers LBowers@pccucc.org
