News & Announcements

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!  The start of the new school year is off to a terrific start!  Here is a look at the exciting first day of the 2017-2018 school year at Penn-Delco.

Penn-Delco Introduces New Handwriting Program

This year the Penn-Delco School District will be using an innovative learning program,  Handwriting Without Tears .  The  program allows our teachers to help young students build a solid educational foundation.  Using music, movement and playful activities, younger students will learn important information and skills, including body awareness, writing readiness, shape recognition, and letter/number formations.  Activities that include Roll-A-Dough letters, creating Mat Man (a wood character) on the floor, and singing songs will help build the fine motor skills necessary for proficient handwriting, and older students will learn letter formation, and cursive writing.  Research continues to demonstrate the value of handwriting as a life skill, including a UCLA/Princeton study that showed that students who hand-wrote lesson notes retained information better than those who typed.

Handwriting Without Tears is part of the Learning Without Tears family, a leader in providing easy-to-learn, easy-to-teach, developmentally appropriate, and inclusive mate rials, and millions of elementary students each year benefit from the program.

Aston Elementary Students Explore Their New Playground

Students at Aston Elementary were welcomed on the first day of school with an brand new playground. The school held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the addition of a brand new playground. Dr. Steinhoff and district administrators joined Ms. Phillips and the staff and students at Aston for the exciting event. The new playground includes a soft surface play area, new swings and play equipment and additional basketball nets that students will love. The blacktop areas have also been completely repaved and lined. The attention to the exterior of the school complements interior improvements made to the building in recent years. The students and staff enjoyed testing out the new equipment and celebration added and fun element to an already exciting first day of school.

Penn-Delco to Offer Health Heroes Flu Vaccine Clinic

Working with the Penn-Delco School District, Health Hero PA is excited to kick off its  2017 school located influenza vaccination clinics. Flu is among the top vaccine preventable  illnesses. Per the CDC, 25 to 50 million cases are reported each year in the United States. They lead to hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and tens of thousands of deaths! Schools are virus incubators, and school children are efficient virus spreaders - they have the highest rates of infection.

The Health Hero program is a voluntary flu vaccination at school program that prevents the disease and reduces student absenteeism. The program has been safely immunizing children for years. This school year, an estimated half a million-school children will be immunized via this program.

To help you keep your child well Health Hero will be providing injectable flu vaccinations on Monday October 30th at the Penn-Delco School District. Please consider having your child vaccinated, help them become a Health Hero, and help us stop the spread of the flu in your school and homes.

· Clinics are safe: a doctor oversees the program and only licensed professionals give the immunizations.

· Clinics have no out of pocket costs: They immunize every healthy child that returns a signed consent form from their parent or guardian.

To take part in the Health Hero Program, please completely fill out, sign, and return the consent form to your school. Once your student is vaccinated they will receive immunization paperwork for your records.

Sun Valley Cafeteria Remodel

A major kitchen/cafeteria remodel has been completed at Sun Valley High School. The project began late last Spring and includes the reconfiguration of the cafeteria space to include a more open serving area, additional seating, and an updated kitchen. Notably, this new Sun Valley Kitchen replaces the original kitchen that has been in operation for decades. The ceiling and floors have been updated and the addition of new skylights will bring in much needed natural light to the space. This new cafeteria provides Sun Valley with a high-efficiency, state of the art kitchen, an improved dock and loading area, new side wall seating for students, enhanced lighting, a separate faculty dining room, and an improved and inviting cafeteria entrance. The new signage and paint refine the area and the bright and airy space is a welcomed improvement for staff and students. Some final cosmetic details including signage and skylight work is nearing completion.  More photos of the cafeteria area will be shared once the project is fully complete.
