Desire in Long-Term Relationships: The Work of Esther Perel

The Dating and Relationship Group

A renowned clinician and author of "Mating in Captivity" (2006), Esther Perel has sought to address an essential paradox of human love: as security and companionship evolve between partners, chemistry and sexual desire often plummet.  Perel investigates this paradox and other conundrums and challenges that confront those who attempt a committed, monogamous relationship.  What she argues and ultimately concludes has ramifications for all facets of psychological development, reflecting themes we have been discussing in our sessions in the past several months.  We will discuss Perel in our next group meeting on Saturday, June 7.  You can become acquainted with Perel's work in the following two youtube videos: video 1 and video 2and in an interview.

Sam Polk and Wealth Addiction

The Men's Group

Sam Polk was an intelligent, ambitious young man who became embroiled in Wall Street and realized significant financial earnings quickly.  Yet he ultimately abandoned his lucrative position and rising career. His depiction of how this all unfolded is available in an intriguing NY Times article.  You can also view Polk in the following two interviews: interview 1 and interview 2.  We will discuss Polk in our next group on June 7, specifically his commentary on the values to which men are typically acculturated.
