Periodontal Disease - The Hidden Killer
Periodontal Disease - The Hidden Killer
Periodontal (or gum) disease is an inflammatory reaction to bacteria under your gums. It can range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that can result in major damage to the soft tissue and even the bone that supports your teeth. In severe, cases, the bone and tissue that hold your teeth in place break down and you can lose your teeth.

Some of the warning signs of periodontal disease include:
  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Bright red or purplish gums
  • Gums that feel tender when touched
  • Gums that pull away from your teeth (recede), making your teeth look longer than normal
  • New spaces developing between your teeth
  • Pus between your teeth and gums
  • Bad breath
  • Bad taste in your mouth
  • Loose teeth
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
Even if you don't notice any symptoms, you may still have some degree of periodontal disease. Only a dentist or periodontist can recognize and determine the progression of periodontal disease.

Researchers have found potential links between periodontal disease and other serious health conditions such as stroke and health disease. Pregnant women with periodontal disease have an increased risk for premature delivery and low birth weight infants. Diabetes is not only a risk factor for periodontal disease but periodontal disease may make diabetes worse.

At our office, we offer preventative and corrective solutions. Treatments range from nonsurgical therapies to control bacterial growth and removal of plaque and tartar, to surgical therapies to restore supportive tissues.

Call our office to make an appointment to have your gums checked for periodontal disease. The sooner you seek care, the better your chances of reversing damage from periodontal disease.
