Naperville Smart Meter Awareness is a group of concerned citizens educating the public about the risks of wireless smart meters. We are comprised of lawyers, technology professionals, health advocates, accountants, business owners and parents in our community.
Smart meters are to be installed in Naperville starting this summer and pose risks in the areas of privacy, costs, security, and health. Our mission is to educate the residents of Naperville by bringing all pertinent information to the public and in doing so, advocate for a smarter solution in Naperville.

| Persuading enough council members to pull their support could stop smart meters
|
Aug 2, 2011. The Naperville Smart Meter Awareness (NSMA) group held their second community conversation discussing the concerns over the planned 57,000 smart meter deployment in Naperville. A few hundred meters are already installed in the East and West Highlands neighborhoods as part of a pilot program.
In attendance were over 50 residents and business owners.
The group is opposed to smart meters based on privacy, security and health concerns, citing these concerns are resulting in moratoriums against the install of smart meters nation-wide.
During the meeting, they made it clear that NSMA is not opposed to improving the efficiency and reliability of the smart grid.
"You can be in support of the smart grid and still question the efficacy of smart meters. Clearly they are not one in the same as I originally thought," stated one attendee.
"If these are so safe, then why are they being stopped all over the country?", another attendee questioned.
The group spent the evening walking participants through the business case, in which they point out many flaws, the privacy and security concerns, and made a "difficult to question" case for the health concerns.
"The evidence is there if you are willing to take the time to look."
As the group methodically dismantled the business case, audience members turned to each other shaking their heads. Gasps were heard when experts in microwave radiation spoke through video about the health concerns.
"This is frightening.", states one women.
"Why was this not taken to referendum?", asks another.
"How much research did the council do on this before they voted to spend this money?", asks yet another resident.
In attendance was Councilman Fieseler who stressed that the city would have contractual problems if it pulled out of the project now.
What about the nonspoken "contract with residents" to spend our money wisely and keep us safe?
Fieseler further stated that there already was a referendum. "They're called elections.", he said.
No Councilman Fieseler - elections and referendums are not the same thing.
Audience members were surprised to say the least at the amount of evidence that clearly stated there is reason to be concerned about the upcoming deployment and but encouraged by Fieseler's statement that persuading enough council members to pull their support could stop any initiative.
"Whether you are concerned about privacy, security, health or just the $22M+ expenditure, any way you look at it, this does not make sense."
We couldn't agree more.
