Phantoms at Falcons Suspended in 2nd Period

An injured Springfield Falcons player prompted the suspension of a game between the Adirondack Phantoms and Springfield Falcons with 3:42 remaining in the second period on Sunday afternoon. Wade MacLeod collapsed on his way back to the Springfield Falcons bench and went into convulsions on the ice in a scary incident that involved the training staffs of both teams as well as the very quick actions and responses of the emergency medical personnel on scene.

A teammate saw MacLeod struggling as he was getting to the bench and helped to catch him as he fell.

Springfield Falcons public relations reported that MacLeod's condition was stabilized and that he was alert as he was stretchered off the ice and taken to an awaiting ambulance and then transported to Bay State Medical Center. MacLeod is a second-year pro from Northeastern University who hails from Coquitlam, British Columbia.

The thoughts and prayers of the Phantoms are with Wade MacLeod for his well-being and for a full and quick recovery.

Adirondack led 2-1 at the time of the suspension on goals by Rob Bordson and Danny Syvret. It is unknown when the game will be completed. Both teams will find a mutually agreeable date within their schedules to resume the contest.

Brandon Manning was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for boarding on the hit in which MacLeod's head jarred against the glass. MacLeod at first appeared to be okay as he skated back to the bench. But several seconds later, MacLeod collapsed just outside the Springfield bench and appeared to be jerking uncontrollably.

Both teams agreed to take the intermission early after MacLeod was stretchered to an ambulance which followed a 12-minute medical delay. The initial plan was to resume play with 3:42 remaining in the second period after taking the break. But later it was decided mutually by the officials as well as the coaching staffs of both teams to not resume the game at all today and to postpone it to a later date.

It was an emotional situation for everyone at the arena as they watched the medical staff working to stabilize MacLeod. Several of the players went to one knee as they stood by in the hushed silence of the MassMutual Center.

The emotions of the moment were likely a significant factor in the mutual decision to suspend the rest of the game for a future date.

Adirondack will have a day off from practice on Monday after playing three games in three days. They will return to practice on Tuesday morning and then will depart for the Philadelphia area on Wednesday immediately after practice.

The Phantoms take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday night at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia in a game that is already sold-out.

Adirondack's next home game in Glens Falls is Sunday at 5:00 against Binghamton celebrating Dax's birthday with specialty Dax Jerseys. Call the Phantoms for tickets at 518-480-3355.
