Pharad's Quarterly Newsletter                    Volume 4, Issue 2, Spring 2014
After a busy first quarter of 2014 we are preparing for more travel this Spring. We would like to extend an invitation to visit us at our two upcoming exhibitions. Contact us ahead of time to set up a meeting or just stop by our booth.

SOFIC Logo We will be exhibiting at SOFIC again this year in Tampa, FL during May 20 - 22 in booth number 1828. We will be displaying our latest and exciting portfolio of  UAV antennas, low visibility covert antennas, and wearable antennas.

From June 3 - 5 we will be back in Tampa for IMS and our booth number is 544. We will be showcasing our latest developments in high performance RF-over-Fiber technology products, our newest LTE antennas, and also introducing a new covert tracking module.

Expanded UAV Antenna and Wearable Antenna Product Offerings
Peel & Stick Antenna
Peel & Stick Antenna
In the last few months we have bolstered our antenna product portfolio with the introduction of new VHF/UHF antennas within each of our antenna product groups. We have developed Peel & Stick Antennas that expand the operating range of our Appliqu Antennas from 30 MHz to 10 GHz. Originally developed for UAV applications, these antennas are increasingly being used to establish covert communications links whose equipment has no visible signature. Within our wearable antenna product offering, we have introduced reduced form factor VHF antennas that fit into the smaller concealable and assault vests/plate carriers that are increasingly favored by the Special Operations community.

Covert Antennas

A global trend is a move away from high visibility antennas. Whether the application is for VIP vehicles or next generation base stations for heterogeneous networks, customers are demanding efficient antennas that have a low visual signature. We have been developing such solutions for a variety of platforms and environments. Call us to investigate the range of possibilities that we can offer for your covert communications link needs.

LTE Antennas

LTE (Long-Term Evolution) was developed to enable high-speed data transmission for wireless terminals. Different countries and areas of the world incorporate different frequency ranges for the delivery of this service. For example, in North America frequencies as low as 700 - 800 MHz are used in addition to higher frequencies above 1 GHz whereas in Asia only bands above 1.8 GHz are utilized. This makes it extremely challenging for RF hardware developers, in particular filter and antenna designers, to make structures that will support all the required bands while also having an electrically small form factor.

LTE Wearable Antenna

"Over the years at Pharad we have developed many electrically small antennas in a variety of form factors but all with a common goal; to maximize the overall efficiency of the radiator for the size constrained environment while ensuring the impedance response is acceptable for the application," said CTO of Pharad, Rod Waterhouse.  "We have recently introduced a range of LTE antenna products that meet this goal."

New Photonic Products
USB Controlled Bias Controller
MBC-DF-UC-U
Pharad recently introduced the MBC-DF-UC-U dither-free ultra-compact modulator bias controller for OEM applications. The bias controller features several enhanced capabilities: continuous tuning of the modulator bias voltage via USB computer control, a simplified easy-to-use control interface, and direct reporting of optical power in the set-up.  The new model also maintains locking of the modulator bias point during any variation of optical input power. The feedback on our new bias controller has been overwhelmingly positive with customers appreciating the simplified set-up.

3 - 50 GHz TX & RX
PTX-030-500 &
 PRX-030-500
We have also released the latest additions to our family of high performance RF-over-Fiber link products. Used together, the PTX-030-500 RF photonic transmitter and PRX-030-500 RF photonic receiver support the low loss, low noise figure and high dynamic range fiber-optic transport of RF signals over the ultra-wideband frequency range of 3 to 50 GHz. "We were approached to create an extremely wideband RF photonic link with very challenging requirements," explained Dalma Novak, Pharad's VP of Engineering. "Platforms comprising multiple radios and RF systems are increasingly becoming more commonplace and our 3- 50 GHz RF photonic transmitter and receiver products are ideal for supporting the fiber optic transport of a multitude of RF signals using a single hardware set."
