#ServingFreedom Down Under

The 2016 Australian Open is under way in Melbourne!  Leading the Freedoms charge down under is the #1 ranked men's doubles player in the world, Freedoms MVP Marcelo Melo!  The 2014 Mylan World TeamTennis Male MVP rejoins regular partner Ivan Dodig in pursuit of a second Grand Slam title in less than a year; the pair defeated Bob & Mike Bryan to win the 2015 French Open crown.  The dynamic duo will take on Aljaz Bedene and Dustin Brown in the first round once doubles play begins Wednesday.  They could face a potential 2nd round encounter with exciting young Americans Austin Krajicek and Donald Young.

On the women's side, CoCo Vandeweghe (left) will look to carry over her 2015 Grand Slam momentum into this year's Australian Open. She'll face a stiff test in a highly anticipated all-American first round match versus Dover, Delaware's Madison Brengle. This match is also notable for bringing the Freedoms-Washington Kastles rivalry to a Grand Slam stage; CoCo and Brengle faced each other on back-to-back nights to close out the 2015 Freedoms season.  While CoCo reached the Quarterfinals of Wimbledon last year, Brengle also had her best career Grand Slam result, reaching the Round of 16 in Melbourne last year. They are scheduled to play the third match on Court 14 Tuesday!

CoCo closed out her 2015 Grand Slam calendar on a high note, reaching the US Open Women's Doubles Semifinals playing with Anna-Lena Groenefeld!  The two will look to recapture that magic in the year's first Grand Slam, where they are the no. 12 seeds.  They'll begin their women's doubles run with a first round match against Germans Annika Beck and Carina Witthoeft.

Another member of the 2015 Freedoms is poised to make a deep run in the women's doubles draw: Abi Spears (right).  The doubles specialist is seeded no. 6 in Australia along with another American and former Freedom, longtime partner Raquel Atawo (formerly Kops-Jones). They'll face a tough draw in the first round against the team of former women's doubles world no. 1 Sara Errani and partner María José Martínez Sánchez.  Should both seeded teams advance through the draw, a potential Freedom vs. Freedom showdown could happen in the 3rd round: Abi and Atawo could face CoCo and Groenefeld!
