Guamoc: gold and adversity

In October 2012, Peace Brigades International (PBI) accompanied the Peasant Farmers' Association of the Cimitarra River Valley (ACVC) which, along with other organizations, presented a series of workshops aimed to strengthen the organizational processes of the mining communities in the hamlet of Mina Walter.

The community of Mina Walter in Guamoc is literally living on top of gold. Artisanal mining has been the livelihood of its residents for decades. This gift of nature has also been its curse, because in addition to the community's isolation, its natural resources have attracted the interests of mining companies and illegal armed groups.
