You are cordially invited to my Open Studio Exhibition next weekend in the Mission district of San Francisco. The preview reception is on Friday, September 30, 6 - 9pm, with a portrait painting demo at 7:30pm. The exhibition, which continues on Saturday and Sunday, October 1 & 2, noon to 6pm, will feature the new Picasso-inspired works I created as part of my Picasso "tableau vivant" performance at the de Young Museum, plus recent figure drawings, which you can read about below:

Picasso "Tableau Vivant" at the de Young

Imagine what Pablo Picasso would have done with digital paint! Whatever tools and media he laid his hands on, he dived into exploring them with passionate gusto, pushed the limits and produced artworks prodigiously. This life-long intense creative activity is apparent in the exhibition Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, Paris, at the de Young Museum until October 10. Picasso's passionate creativity and incessant curiosity has been an inspiration for my own artistic journey. I was therefore thrilled to be asked by the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco to portray the master himself, Pablo Picasso, in a Picasso "tableau vivant" performance at the de Young Museum a few weeks back.

For the tableau I re-created "Picasso's studio" at one of the Friday night Cultural Encounters and worked on three artworks as visitors watched. The artworks were Man with a Guitar (portrait of Flamenco guitarist Ryan Kelly Garcia), Le Canard (portrait of Picasso's mistress Marie-Thrse Walter aka Peggy Gyulai) and Still Life with Flowers, Guitar and Jug. All three artworks will be displayed at my upcoming Open Studios exhibition, along with artworks created during my earlier tableau vivant portrayals of Edgar Degas and Vincent van Gogh.

Life Drawing

Back to the Figure

Drawing is at the core of every artwork I make. I've recently returned to my roots making figure drawings from life. I had loved drawing from the figure at the Ruskin School at Oxford in the '70s/'80s, and at the Vrije Academie in The Hague. After a hiatus of many years I am loving the figure drawing class I am now taking at the City College of San Francisco. Some of these drawings will be included in my Open Studio exhibition. Media includes charcoal, conte and ink.

Drawing from direct observation of the model trains your eye to quickly discern the essence, to observe a composition in the abstract, to identify and differentiate tonal values from surface color, and to develop an acute awareness of the effects of different light sources on different surfaces and forms. As Richard Serra says in the September issue of Modern Painters: "The eye is like a muscle, and the more you draw, the better you see."

Montmartre in the Mission!

Be sketched! Throughout the Open Studio weekend I will be drawing portrait sketches on paper. You can come along and sit for your own original hand-drawn portrait sketch.

See a selection of my original paintings, drawings and fine art prints, including some earlier works never previously exhibited. If you're unable to visit in person but are interested in purchasing any of my artworks, please feel free to pick up the phone and give me a call (415.641.1221). In addition I'll extend my special Open Studios pricing worldwide for the duration of the show. Fine art prints of my works are available through my online store.
