A Message From Michelle
I recently attended the LeadingAge PA state conference in Hershey, PA. (LeadingAge PA is the statewide organization for non-profit senior living services). As if Hershey isn't inspirational enough with its acres of rolling farmland and the aroma of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups wafting through the air, I was fortunate to find the inspiration for my message this month from one of the keynote speakers, Alton Fitzgerald White.

Mr. White has performed the role of Mufasa in the hit Broadway show, The Lion King, a staggering 4,308 times! His bio includes numerous other Broadway and TV successes. And while his talent is evident, his message is simple..." Make your passion, your purpose". His story is of a man who grew up in the projects of Cincinnati, OH; the youngest of 6 children; son of an alcoholic father and despite the challenges he faced, he knew he had one secret...he could sing. He guarded this secret fiercely because he knew it set him apart from everyone around him. When he became old enough to leave, he set off to find his way, taking his passion for singing and acting and creating his purpose to share this talent and inspire others.

And while his story may not necessarily be yours or mine, there are definitely take-aways that can inspire all of us. He said, "I perceived my 'gifts' as my 'service' to others and it helped me to redefine the definition of 'service' ". Each one of us possesses a light and a strength that can become the purpose we share with others. I am reminded daily of the strength of character, the passion and resilience as I am a link in the chain of caring for others. Our residents, their families and our staff form incredible binding relationships that allow all of us the opportunity to find our passion and to realize its purpose. Look closely within...it's there!

Happy July.... Enjoy the summer and stay cool!!
