PTO Presents RadKids Safety Program

running-backpack-children.jpgThe February PTO meeting will feature Karen Fisher with the radKIDS program.  Join us Tuesday, February 10th at 6:30 in the ACC Multipurpose Room.

RadKIDS puts the safety of kids in their own hands by SHOWING them how to be safe, not just by TELLING them what to do. Other safety programs give children general guidance rules, show videos, or simply "talk" to the children. radKIDS is dedicated to providing our children with a hands-on, activity-based, physical skill development program.  It empowers children with instinctual options they need to recognize, avoid, and if necessary, respond to potential danger. When a child is approached or grabbed by a stranger, bullied, or touched inappropriately, the response needs to be immediate, instinctual, and absolute.

This event is for parents to come learn and we are offering free child care. The upper school students will be watching our children and earning service hours.

Measles Awareness

Currently there is an outbreak of measles in 14 states across the USA. According to the CDC,

"Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus. It spreads through the air through coughing and sneezing. Measles starts with a fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat, and is followed by a rash that spreads all over the body. About three out of 10 people who get measles will develop one or more complications including pneumonia, ear infections, or diarrhea. Complications are more common in adults and young children."

Since measles is contagious before the rash appears, please keep your child at home if he/she has been exposed to someone with measles. As always, children should stay home with fever and/or suspicious rashes.

For more information, please refer to the CDC's website here: http://www.cdc.gov/measles/index.html or call the Nurse Office at 704-237-5333.

Maximize Your Time!

Hello Pine Lake Students!

Each day is a chance for a fresh start to organize a messy binder, or write down a schedule to keep abreast of what is happening in the week. As the days go by, one little mess can snowball into a disorganized problem. With tips from upper school counselor, Anna Bulfin, no time management or organization issue is too small. Here are some great ideas from her recent workshop to help all high-schoolers stay on track.

Before getting started on cleaning out anything, one needs to think about what takes up most of her time. By understanding how much time is spent doing homework versus relaxing, one can paint a clear picture of what she needs to prioritize. A student can be informed about her classes by checking Edmodo to see what homework she has due the following day, and powerschool to assess her grades in each class.

Once a student is informed about what she needs to accomplish each day for each of her classes, she can use post-it notes or a day planner to keep track of her appointments and assignments. If technology is the prefered medium to use for reminders, google calendar, evernote, myhomeworkapp, and spaaze are all approved methods. Each of these digital calendars and apps help to keep a student aware of what is due, and what is happening in the weeks ahead.

Another helpful tool for organization is to use the "space" acronym. The "s" stands for sort, meaning to sort all homework, classwork and papers into a binder by each class. This way no math homework will get lost in the science folder, and each item will be in its proper place. The "p" stands for purge, meaning to get rid of old papers and anything that isn't used on a regular basis. (Keeping unneeded papers allows for a year's worth of junk to pile up, so don't let this happen.) The "a" stands for assign a home, meaning to decide where each item should go. Owning and using a homework folder with various binders is smart because it will help to prevent a student from losing papers. The "c" stands for contain, meaning to buy containers and to label them accordingly. When each class has a home, it's easier to find items when looking for them. The "e" stands for equalize, meaning to maintain and update your bins, binders and folders. At the end of each week, throwing out unnecessary papers, sorting notes, and filing away tests will keep a student in tip-top shape for Monday.

These are some helpful tips and tricks from Ms. Bulfin to keep all PLP students organized and able to manage time like a pro. By forming a plan that fits a student's individual needs, she will be able to notice a change in only a few weeks by sticking to her schedule. No matter what type of student, everyone can benefit from a little organization. Being prepared and informed goes a long way.

Happy organizing!

Sincerely,
Sarah Lucander
