PINTAIL LIMIT FOR 2018-19 SEASON GOES BACK TO TWO
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife recently released its Adaptive Harvest Management report for the 2018-19 waterfowl season, and the latest breeding population survey supports increasing the northern pintail limit back to two birds per day.

The report said, "Based on a liberal, 1-bird daily bag limit, regulatory alternative selected for the 2017 hunting season and an estimated 2017 breeding population size of 2.89 million pintails observed at a mean latitude of 56.7 degrees, the optimal regulatory choice for the 2018 hunting season for all four Flyways is the liberal regulatory alternative with a 2-bird daily bag limit."
While this will not change the one bird limit mandated for this coming waterfowl season, CWA applauds the increase for the 2018-19 season.
CWA has repeatedly stressed to the Service the importance of pintail harvest opportunity for California hunters and the desire for an increase in the daily limit. CWA's Regulations and Traditions Committee recently recommended a formal letter be sent to the Pacific Flyway Council requesting the inclusion of regulatory option(s) for increasing the daily limit to three birds, like what is currently offered in the Mississippi and Central Flyway states under certain regulatory frameworks. CWA also will be conducting a science-based hunter survey to help determine regulatory options for pintail that enjoy the greatest hunter support in California.

On a related note, CWA recently hosted a pintail workshop that included participation of the Service, Department of Fish and Wildlife and other waterfowl interests, including Delta Waterfowl and Ducks Unlimited, which focused on pintail biology and current management efforts.

CWA TESTIFIES AGAINST SAN JACINTO DEVELOPMENT
CWA director of water law & policy, Jeffrey Volberg, testified Wednesday against a development proposal that would place houses within 200 feet of the San Jacinto Wildlife Area. Several San Jacinto Valley public land and duck club hunters, as well as Department of Fish & Wildlife officials, also testified before the Riverside County Planning Commission. The Commission put off a decision on the project until October 4. The Commission is leaning toward adopting a Specific Plan that would not allow residential development north of the Ramona Expressway but would allow some commercial development.
