Happy New Year! Though we'd planned for 'A Year in Pictures,' and imagined ourselves putting an in-depth retrospective together, in the same way one envisions herself scrubbing the spaces between bathroom tiles while energizing music plays, none of the above occurred.
| Erica |
Instead, we got back to the grind and read other people's year-end reviews, like this one for Chopin Theatre. Phlash descended upon 'Pipeline HQ' pumped for 2011, with no less than 458 new photos. And that's not including the hundred or so that we shot during the break, like when we popped into the new Trillium Boutique, 1744 W. Division. Trillium's owner, Erica, right, might look familiar--we featured her in this enewsletter when she worked at Tangerine, 1719 N. Damen. Trillium is named for the flower which grows in Erica's native Michigan.
| Elizabeth |
We also attempted to add audio files to today's coverage, with attempt being the operative word. We conducted an audio interview with Elizabeth, left, of Eskell, 1509 N. Milw., who reported that she and her business partner, Kelly, will now be repping their own fashion line, also called Eskell, at trade shows. This will enable the designers to save money by not having to pay a commission to a sales rep. "Nobody knows Eskell better than we do, so we'll be selling the line ourselves," Elizabeth said.
| Isabella, left, and Simone |
At the North Avenue bus stop, Simone and her friend, Isabella, right, were headed to lunch. If Simone looks familiar, it's because she is the daughter of Bernard Runo, owner of Sweet Thang, which closed a few years ago. Simone reported that her father is now a concierge at the Suissotel and teaches baking classes at Kendall College. Simone, who grew up in Wicker Park, said that she hopes the new year will be a good one for independent business owners. We agreed.
| Noel |
At Harold's Chicken Shack, 1361 N. Milw., we met Noel, an electrician who lives in nearby Logan Square. Noel reported that he's expecting "same old, same old, except for a couple of vacation days" for 2011. Noel already knows where he will be headed on those precious days off.... Find him on the beaches of Key West, Florida. Assisting with the audio interviews was 'Wolverang,' who has contributed pieces to NPR, and now and then writes stories like Manila Envelopes. In 2011 we may include creative pieces here on occasion, so send us your stories.
| New owners of Yuca Cafe, fresh out of Miami. The man in the middle is Alex.
|
Prior to taking to the streets to find out what's on people's minds for the New Year, we popped by Yuca Cafe, 2257 W. North Ave. The food was delicious, particularly the freshly squeezed OJ. The space, which formerly housed Pannenkoeken Cafe, is under new ownership ( got a Groupon?). Per the cafe owners, above, whom I'd met earlier in the week, Yuca means 'Young Urban Cuban American." Check out the Yuca lunch menu here.
| A Bloody Mary at Tweet, which us a bit out of the neighborhood, but with a Bucktown connection: there's a dish at the Uptown restaurant named after Bucktown artist Tony Fitzpatrick. |
Joining Yuca Cafe are new or newish local ventures such as Green Corner Cafe, which we featured in our year-end double issue. Other notable newcomers include Red Hot Ranch, J. Wellington's, Bake, Birchwood Kitchen, Buzz Killer Espresso, Forte, Filter, and Pipeline sponsors Jackson Junge Gallery and Framing, REarrange, The Wormhole, and Miko's Flipside.
| I saw the sign, it said... |
We wish success to all of the new businesses in town, with apologies to any we've missed. We also wish continued prosperity to longtime locals like Melissa of Bucktown Wicker Park Dental Associates, above. Dr. Melissa

| Masada |
installed a sign for her practice just this past Sunday. Masada of Sultan's Market, 2057 W. North, right, shared her hopes for the new year over a glass of champagne. "I hope the economy gets better for everyone, that the whole world lives in peace. We don't have time to get mad at each other. Life is short. Enjoy every moment, not minute." We'd be remiss not to acknowledge that 2010 was a difficult year. It is our hope that everyone will band together in 2011 to strengthen the local economy. The tougher years make the better ones stand out by contrast. We plan to make 2011 one of those better years. Join us in getting better together. We can't do it without you. Cheers, Alisa, Phlash, Pat, Dika |

Picture Pages Snapped @Pint Photos by Philin Phlash/click on images to enlarge Pint Bar & Restaurant p: 773-772-7990, 1547 N. Milw. Mon-Fri, SUN: 11AM-2AM; SAT: 11AM-3AM
This past Saturday night, Phlash popped by Pint and came across a break-dancing family, Chi-Town's Finest Breakers, led by father Henry, aka Dj Westside. The breakers had just come back home from NYC, where they
performed on Paula Abdul's new show, Live to Dance, which debuted last night (Tues) on CBS-Channel 2. In the 1980s, Phlash spent a lot of time photographing break dancers. Of the next generation, he observed, "These are more than cute kids; they can really do it. Spinderalla was taking photos with a camera WHILE spinning on her head. I mean, come on. Wow!"

Residential SPACES: Made possible by Eva Bergant, @Properties Realtor
Fulfilling one of my many New Year Resolutions, this is my first column for The Pipeline. If one of your goals for 2011 is to buy, sell, or rent real estate, the first thing you should do is confirm your Credit Score. AnnualCreditReport.com provides access to all three of the major credit bureaus. You can do each one free once each year, so the best way to stay on top of your score is to do one free search every 4 months. If you want your FICO credit score (FICO is the score lenders use to determine your credit risk) you will have to pay $7.95. If your report shows what you know to be true, you are on the right track. Repairing or improving your credit score takes months or years. Empower yourself by knowing your score in advance. Recently, a buyer client did not know until she applied for a mortgage that someone had used her good credit to open and run up a store charge card. It took four months to get the store to agree to remove the delinquency and for the credit score to start to move up.

The city's overnight 3 AM-7 AM parking ban affecting these arterial streets ends April 1, 2011. There's an additional snow ban which affects streets when there's at least two inches of snow. The SSA #33/WPB contracts with vendor Cleanslate to provide daily street cleaning services year round, as well as additional snow removal when there's more than an inch of snow on sidewalks and streets. This service is supplemental and does not relieve any able individual of the responsibility of clearing his or her walkway (Chicago Municipal Code 4-4-310 and 10-8-180). Do your neighbors need a friendly reminder of the shoveling code? Here's a bit of help from the ATA. Questions/comments about local snow removal can be sent to the SSA#33/WPB office via email.

| Domenic | Domenic of Lucia Restaurant is one of many locals who still has his lights and decorations up. "We wait until Mid-January; there's a Catholic holiday coming up," he said to me one cold winter night as I was walking past Lucia's. If you take your lights down before Jan 18, any broken and/or unwanted lights can be dropped off at the chamber office for proper recycling, per this flier. Do you have a tree that needs somewhere to go other than a dumpster? Consider recycling your tree at one of the city's 23 drop-off centers, through Mon., Jan. 17.

| First Ward Alderman Proco Joe Moreno |
In advance of the Feb. 22, 2011 elections, the Wicker Park Committee will host an Aldermanic forum tonight (Wed, Jan. 5) at the Wicker Park Lutheran Church, 2112 W. LeMoyne. From the status of the Bloomingdale Trail to the Marvin Envelope building, vacant storefronts, bicycle safety, recycling, crime, graffiti, and a dizzying number of other issues impacting our neighborhood on a day-to-day basis, it should be an informative gathering. For information on the 1st and 32nd Ward candidates and incumbents, check out Our Urban Times. Not sure which ward you are in? This might help. Additionally, the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce is co-hosting a 32nd Ward Aldermanic Forum on Thurs., Jan. 20, 2011. The recent chamber e-newsletter can be read here.

Sound OFF: In the City of Big Shoulders, Do We Ask What Color Shoulders Are? By Philin Phlash

| Derrick Rose Scores/ Photo by Philin Phlash |
In this day and age, does it matter that Derrick Rose has black shoulders, or Jay Cutler has white shoulders?
No, not in our world. What we care about is that they are good at what they do. Period.
People care that these guys go out on the court or field and give 100% or more to win. They try their best, and really, that's all the public can ask. Try hard for us, for Chicago, our kind of town. READ MORE HERE. -PP

Manila Envelopes By Wolverang
There are many manila envelopes associated with my job. I have a sliding drawer that is many times completely full of manila envelopes. One of the main chores of my job is to give these manila envelopes to people who walk in and ask for them. They say, "Hello." I in turn also give them a greeting. They tell me who they are and that they want a manila envelope. I open the big sliding drawer that has all of the manila envelopes in it and look for the manila envelope that corresponds with their particular name.

| Wolverang | READ MORE HERE.
By day, Wolverang now works as a technical writer, though he used to specialize in manila envelopes. By night, he is a hack musician and boomerang enthusiast. He's also contributed to NPR, though under a different name than the one he prefers to use here. We understand. Do you have a humorous and short story that you'd like to share with readers? Email us!

SO MUCH ETC., SO LITTLE TIME!
Are you a theater buff? We are too. Well, when we have time to check out all the local performances. As reported in our Dec. 21 issue, there are now FIVE places to check out live theater in the neighborhood. Pat J. Daily reviewed Pirates of Penzance, and I checked out Bus Stop. Both shows are still running and provide great respite from the cold winter nights. If you are a local theater company and would like to sponsor a section to make Performance Listings possible in 2011, along with original reviews, and links to other reviews, let us know.

| Witnessing at the New Year's Day Gospel Bowl/ Photo by Philin Phlash | Phlash reported that he'd had an amazing first day of 2011. This made us smile! Phlash always gives us some reason, however small, to keep on going with the Pipeline. Phlash started the First Day of 2011 at the 25th-Annual Gospel Bowl, where preachers from various

| New Year's Eve at Moonshine/ Photo by Philin Phlash (we/Alisa were at Green Eye, camera free, but glad Phlash was toting his b/c we love his images and hope you do too!) | congregations gathered together and asked for witnesses. "Before I knew it, I had shaken hands with everyone around me, and then came to the front of the room and was shaking hands with Reverend Humphrey, who played James Brown. He [Humphrey] made everyone in that room feel good. It was a great start to my year." Later that same day, Phlash took his two sons to the Bulls game, where the Bulls scored 100 points, prompting a free Big Mac for all from McDonald's. Phlash said that he will not take advantage of the Big Mac, though.

| Juan | Speaking of Phlash, I think there could be a six-degrees-of-Phlash thing going on in the neighborhood, because while I was a local Laundromat, I met a West Bucktown resident who used to be Phlash's neighbor. Juan recognized me from the WPC Scarecrow Extravaganza. Though Juan said that he does not believe in making NY resolutions, he revealed a goal for this year: To get a teaching job. He just completed his studies at Northeastern University and is certified to teach French and Spanish to H.S. students. Congrats!
In other news, Phlash would like to send a warning to all drivers who might encounter the cameras at Damen and Division. While going west on Division, and turning right on to Damen, the camera will go off if you are even a few inches over the white line, even if you do not turn right. Phlash learned this the hard way with a $100 ticket. Ouch.
Do you have a spare $400,000 and an interest in purchasing a historic Wicker Park church? St. Paul's Church, 2215 W. North, currently housing tenant NNWAC, is bearing a new sign which reads 'priced to sell.' Its landmark status means that the front facade, windows, and doors cannot be tampered with, and there are possible tax credits available for rehab. Ted Mercer is the Cityscape broker who is trying to find the right buyer for the unique property. "Up in Logan Square, on Palmer, somebody just took a church and made it into a single family home," Ted said when he returned our call.
American Apparel is offering a substantial 30% off for online F&F and friends of F&F orders, per this AA e-newsletter.

| Art by Rick Liebenow | Do you like The Pipeline? We do too, or at least we hope we are spending this much of our disappearing free time on something we love! But it does cost $$ to send this thing out. We are entering a contest in manic hopes of winning free software, but I'm not very good at winning, and can't recall the last time I won anything, unless getting the top initials on a video arcade game counts, which sort of felt like winning when it happened this past weekend. I just need to find more time to play more arcade games in the new year. And then everything will be OK.
Caffe Streets, a new coffee shop, is hiring, per this sign. Also hiring, or at least auditioning, is Fellowship of the Boobs, a new burlesque show over at Gorilla Tango Theatre.
