Explore WaterWise Home Landscapes
Bring your camera and notepad to the WaterWise Landscape Tour on Saturday, Oct. 21, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. It's FREE and you can tour at your own pace. Explore and be inspired by five Plano home gardens and the Environmental Education Center's grounds. We will be highlighting attractive, drought-tolerant plants and identifying them with signs to help you note your favorites. Helpful, friendly volunteers at each home can address your questions. Tour different homes than previous years with unique gardening styles. Some residents have added features such as solar panels, pollinator sanctuaries, rainwater harvesting systems and original artwork, so there's something for everyone's curiosity.

Stop by the headquarters (Environmental Education Center) at 4116 W. Plano Parkway, to observe the Monarch butterfly migration, to get a free soil moisture meter (while supplies last) and enjoy free refreshments. Consult with experts for advice on irrigation, composting and landscape design. Our partners include Shades of Green Inc., Texas Pure Products and Heads Up Sprinkler Co. LLC. Print a tour map or follow the interactive map at plano.gov/landscapetour for a great adventure.

Tour a Plano Fire Station and Plan 2 Ways Out
Don't Miss the Fire Station Open House in Your Neighborhood on Oct. 6.
Do you have a home escape plan?  It's Fire Prevention Week and we want you to remember that "Every Second Counts, Plan 2 Ways Out."

"Developing and practicing a home escape plan is like building muscle memory," said Sam Greif, Plano Fire Chief. "That pre-planning is what everyone will draw upon to snap into action and escape as quickly as possible in the event of a fire."

Follow these tips for developing  and practicing a home escape plan:
  • Draw a map of your home with all members of your household. Mark two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home and practice using different ways out.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can't help them.
  • Make sure the house number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
  • Close doors behind you as you leave -- this may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.
  • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
  • Visit fpw.org for more information on planning two ways out of your home.
Tour your nearby Plano Fire Station during the Open House on Monday, Oct. 23, 6-8 p.m. Station 1 (K Avenue) is closed for renovations but the other 12 Fire Stations are open for visits. Follow this interactive map  or use the flyer  to find a station near your home .
