NASCIO Technology Champion Award
Submissions due January 22

The NASCIO Technology Champion Award honors innovative leadership that promotes sound information technology solutions, policies and practices. Recipients have a proven track record of sustained interest in and advocacy for IT in the public sector.

Nominations for the NASCIO Technology Champion Award opened December 9 at www.nascio.org/Awards/NTC/Nominations. Deadline for submissions is January 22.






Data Privacy Day Champions

NASCIO has committed to being a Champion of Data Privacy Day (DPD), an international effort held annually on January 28 to create awareness about the importance of privacy and protecting personal information. 
Data Privacy Day is part of a greater effort, the #PrivacyAware campaign, which helps consumers understand how they can own their online presence and reminds businesses that privacy is indeed good for business.

FirstNet Releases Much Anticipated RFP 
On January 13, FirstNet released its final RFP that seeks industry solutions to the deployment, construction, and maintenance of the National Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN). The RFP marks a significant milestone in FirstNet's buildup to the buildout; click here to read the RFP. The winning bid must meet sixteen objectives, which includes cybersecurity. Questions about the RFP are due February 12 and proposals are due April 29, 2016.

Omnibus Includes Language on MS-ISAC Cost Share
Included in the omnibus appropriations bill that passed Congress in mid-December was report language directing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) to provide justification for decreasing its current level of financial support for the MS-ISAC. NPPD was further directed to coordinate with relevant stakeholders on a timeline for establishing a cost share plan.

Committee and Working Group Updates

The January Cybersecurity Committee call featured a presentation on CyberCorps from the Department of Homeland Security. The next meeting will be February 16, and will include a presentation from Florida Chief Information Security Officer Danielle Alvarez.  For those participating on the committee, be sure to watch the NASCIO Community for call information, agendas and notices.
The next National Innovation Forum Meeting will be February 10 and will be on the topics of GIS Innovation and Business Intelligence / Analytics Data Management.
The State IT Procurement Modernization Committee continues to work on the NASCIO procurement modernization campaign for 2016. Members of the NASCIO Executive Committee have provided procurement examples to help the campaign and others are desired. Please contact Meredith Ward at mward@NASCIO.org if you are interested in providing examples.

The committee now meets bi-monthly; schedule as follows: 
  • March 9 at 2 p.m. Eastern
  • Meeting at NASCIO's Midyear Conference (May 3-5) 
  • July 13 at 2 p.m. Eastern
  • Meeting at NASCIO's Annual Conference (Sept 18-21)
  • November 9 at 2 p.m. Eastern
Operating as a subcommittee of the Cybersecurity Committee, the Privacy and Data Protection Working Group will be a forum to discuss relevant issues in the states. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to: privacy practices and policies with respect to electronic communications, cloud services, location tracking, automatic license plate readers, unmanned aerial vehicles and IoT. The expected format is a sharing of best practices by states and presentations from chief privacy officers.

The working group will have monthly meetings by conference call or webinar the last Wednesday of each month at 3:00 p.m. Eastern. Issue brief(s) on relevant topics may be developed at the discretion of the working group.
