Did you Know?

1. Croquet is believed to have its origins in 17th-century palle-maille, a game often played in London's Pall Mall. It has been said that only tobacco smoke spread faster through the British Empire.

2. Croquet was the first outdoor sport to embrace equality, allowing both sexes to play the game on an equal footing.

A Week in the Life of an Early American Child

HHS hosted our summer program on June 20 to June 23 at the museum. We had a wonderful week of crafts, dance, baking and chores. Thank you to Bob and Vivienne McGarry of Cold Goats Farm in Haddam Neck for bringing Bobby Jean and her adorable quadruplet lambs over for a visit.

Shiny Lapel Trio

Music on the River

Thank you to Jay and Janet Verney for hosting a delightful evening on Higganum Landing. The music was stellar, the food fantastic and the weather cooperated. The setting along the river was unrivaled and everyone has a GREAT time!

It is here!

Our new garden shed arrived last week. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of former director Jan Sweet, the society was able to have a custom-built garden shed constructed to store our various garden tools and museum apparatus. The new shed now allows us to interpret the outhouse and have it a "necessary" part of the tour experience. Stop by for tour!

Connecticut's Historic Gardens Day

Thank you to everyone who made Connecticut's Historic Garden Day a great success. We had over 45 visitors tour both the garden and house. Thank you to Cindy Sullivan, Anna Moreno, Pat Hartman, Sarah Neal, Dianne McHutchison, and Bruce Johnston for all your help that day! A special shout out to Deb Rutter and her wonderful garden volunteers who have done a FABULOUS job on the gardens and grounds! THANK YOU all!

Haddam Historical Society presents
Heart of the Home Kitchen Tour
Saturday, September 23, 2017
11 am to 4 pm

On Saturday, September 23, 2017 the Haddam Historical Society will host a tour of seven stunning kitchens from 11 am to 4 pm. The tour will feature some of Haddam's and Higganum's most fabulous kitchens dating from the 1700s to today. Many of the highlighted kitchens have been innovatively and professionally renovated and demonstrate how a new kitchen can work in an old house. Visitors will also view historic 18th century kitchens where cooking was done on the hearth. Each stop on the tour will feature a special demonstration, display or tasting. Tickets are $25 per person in advance and $30 day of the tour.  Please visit www.haddamhistory.org for additional information.
