Please allow me to introduce myself...

Good day to you all.

My name is Aaron J Kyle and I am your new Chamber of Commerce President.  This is my first ENews post and I am very excited.  A brief bio, they said so, I am a native of 29 Palms and have lived here for most of my life.  I worked at the Alamo and for my father, Jim Kyle of Kyle's Air Conditioning and Mojave Bluez fame.  I grew up here, went to school here, and am raising my family here.  I am your neighbor, I see you at the grocery store and post office, I went to school with you, and our kids go to school together.  I own Aaron's Air Services, I know every street and hill and valley in this wonderful small town.  I know many of you as well and the ones that I don't, well, I hope to meet you soon.  It is my mission to get the Chamber back on track with its mission.

The Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to meeting the needs of its membership and community by fostering economic opportunity, and developing a favorable business climate while enhancing our quality of life.

I have been reading that a lot lately.  I joined the Chamber 2 years ago, when I joined I paid, I spoke with the staff, and left.  I didn't hear anything from the Chamber for 3 months.  I had to call them to get my plaque that I purchased.  I didn't receive any mail nor phone calls from them.  I was bummed.  I decided to get involved and find out what was going on.  9 Month's later and I'm the President.  The first elected president in nearly 2 and a half years.  I want you to know that I am on your side, that your board is on your side, that your staff is on your side.  We want to know what your needs are.  We have a conference room that is ready for you to use.  We have a really nice printer and internet access for you. And above all, we have an amazing referral network ready to send business your way.  Your new board is one of the best ever, with a wide array of talents.  Let us know.  Talk to us.  Send us messages and we will respond, with action.  I've heard the talk, I've been paid lip service, I am promising you action.  If you have a grievance, tell us, if you have a compliment, tell us.  Your board and I, we, are getting back to the basics, the fundamentals of our mission.  You all will be getting an email soon, with some basic polling questions.  Please answer them so we can better serve you.

Lastly, our 80th annual Pioneer Days celebration is fast approaching.  We are working hard to provide easy access to potential clients and customers for you with this event.  We will have marketing on the base and basin wide to secure the most possible number of people and give you a phenomenal opportunity to share your business with the community.  Please come and see me, email me, write me a letter, or call me or your board or staff and we will help you have success at this dynamic celebration.  Not only is it our 80th Pioneer Days, it is 29 years as 29 Palms, the 75th Anniversary of Joshua Tree National Monument/Park, and the 100th Birthday of the National Park Service.  This convergence of birthdays will only amplify your opportunity to expose your business or non-profit.

Serving you,

Aaron J Kyle
President
Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce.

Skys's the Limit

Saturday, August 27 at Sky's The Limit:
Sidewalk Astronomy

Sky's the Limit Observatory and Nature Center invites stargazers to enjoy the desert night sky on Saturday, August 27 at a free public event that begins at 8:00 pm and ends around 12:00 am. The Observatory is at 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms, just outside the north entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.
Volunteers will set up a variety of kinds and sizes of telescopes on the winding sidewalks, and guests are welcome to use them or may bring their own binoculars and scopes as well. The presentation is very casual, so come at any time and leave when you wish. Bring a red flashlight to preserve night vision.
Mars and Saturn will be the main attractions and are very close in the southern sky near Scorpius. Also look for the bright clouds of the center of Milky Way galaxy that will be just to the east of Saturn. Many of the finest clusters and nebulae are in this region of the Milky Way including the Lagoon, Trifid, and Swan nebulae and the sparkling Butterfly and Wild Duck Clusters.
Prominent constellations are Scorpius (the Scorpion), Delphinus (the Dolphin), Aquila (the Eagle), Sagittarius (the Archer), Cygnus (the Swan), and Lyra (the Harp).
The campus is always open, so arrive around sunset to allow time to visit other educational attractions before the cosmic tour begins at dark. Dress for unpredictable desert weather and bring snacks, water bottles, and chairs. Children under 16 must be accompanied by adults. No pets and no smoking allowed on the STL campus, and visitors must carry out all trash.

The seasonal sky is very unpredictable and a viewing event may have to be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled due to cloudiness, rain, or excessive wind.
Check Sky's The Limit Facebook Page or follow@STL29Palms to learn the latest status of an event, or call Steve at (760) 401-3004.

For more information and to see photos taken through STL's 14" Celestron Schmidt-Cassegraintelescope, visit the STL web site at www.skysthelimit29.org. STL is an affiliate of the Basin Wide Foundation, a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Donations to support Sky's The Limit's e ducational programs are gratefully accepted.

"Desert Bees and Climate Change"
Black Rock Lecture Series

Join Michael Orr, Doctoral Candidate at Utah State University, who will talk about his research at Joshua Tree National Park titled "Desert Bees and Climate Change".  Bees are necessary pollinators in natural and managed ecosystems, but much remains unknown about our native bee fauna. Of the roughly 4,000 species in North America, the majority are found in the southwestern deserts. Thankfully, numerous preserves and parks protect these vital ecosystems. As one of the largest and least sampled, Joshua Tree National Park is an ideal place to investigate bee species richness. Michael Orr's main goal is to begin building a species list for the park, which can then be judged against those of other areas nearby. He has also taken time to make behavioral observations whenever possible, especially in regards to what bees eat and how they nest. Both of these factors influence where bees can live.
Stemming from a lifelong interest in insects, Michael completed his undergraduate degree in Entomology at Cornell University. There, he worked in Dr. Bryan Danforth's lab as a member of the Apple Pollinator Project. Furthering his newfound interest in bees, Michael took a year off before graduate school to work as a Smithsonian Institution Collections Intern for Dr. Sean Brady and as a USGS Contractor to Sam Droege. Both positions honed Michael's bee identification skills, which prepared him for his PhD work at Utah State.
Sponsored by the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park, this lecture will be held at the Black Rock Visitor Center, 9800 Black Rock Canyon, Yucca Valley, CA 92284 on Friday, September 2, 7 pm - 8 pm.  The lecture is free and open to the public

Old Schoolhouse  Lecture featuring Clifford Trafzer and his talk on "A Chemehuevi Song".  The Chemehuevi of the Twenty-Nine Palms tribe of Southern California stands as a testament to the power of perseverance. This small, nomadic band of Southern Paiute Indians has been repeatedly marginalized by European settlers, other Native groups, and, until now, historical narratives that have all too often overlooked them. This lecture takes place at the Old Schoolhouse in 29 Palms at 7 pm.  Admission is $5.00.  A dinner with the speaker will be held at the 29 Palm Inn at 5 pm.  Please call Diana at 760-367-5539 for dinner reservations before Wednesday, September 7.

Mojave Desert Land Trust

Don't miss this opportunity to learn valuable skills as a Volunteer Monitor and make an invaluable contribution to Mojave Desert land conservation!

All land acquired by the Mojave Desert Land Trust (MDLT) must be permanently monitored to ensure it remains undisturbed, even after it is donated to the National Park Service. Monitoring is one of the fundamental activities a land trust or natural resource management agency can perform.

Volunteers play a central role in MDLT's ability to ensure that currently owned and donated lands are protected forever. Volunteer Monitoring Ranger Training will include:
  • Locating properties in the field using Samsung tablets with the Backcountry Navigator Application as well as GPS units (if you bring your own) and topographic maps.
  • Monitoring properties and maintaining a written and photo log.
  • Documenting threats such as illegal use of off-highway vehicles and dumping.
  • Documenting wildlife sightings for habitat modeling.
  • Field safety and awareness course.
  • Training on tablet technology.
A specialty training course for volunteers on MDLT's Samsung Galaxy Tablets will be provided by MDLT field professionals and lead volunteer monitoring rangers. If you have a passion for navigating and stewarding the wide open spaces, you won't want to miss this training!

Volunteers are always encouraged to bring along their personal GPS units, as we will still provide guidance on how to use GPS units to locate MDLT properties; however, tablets are what we provide to all Rangers for monitoring.

Volunteer Monitor Training Dates:

Introduction and Field Readiness Training: Friday, September 23rd from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the MDLT Headquarters, 60124 29 Palms Hwy Joshua Tree, CA

Academy instructor Nelms McKelvain teaches one of the piano classes as part of the Hi-Desert Cultural Center's ArtsTech Academy program. The program is greatly expanding for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year and is seeking enthusiastic arts and core academic educators and tutors to join its team.

Hi-Desert Cultural Center's ArtsTech Academy program seeks arts and academic educators and tutors

The Hi-Desert Cultural Center's ArtsTech Academy program is greatly expanding for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year and is seeking enthusiastic arts and core academic educators and tutors to join its team.  Last year, the program served over 250 students weekly and has been critically lauded for its exceptional programming and high-quality, inspiring, and innovative education.  The Hi-Desert Cultural Center is among the most recognized arts institutions in the Southern California desert region, and the unprecedented success of its educational programs spawned one of the largest academic movements in the region - the formation of a new arts and technology-focused public charter school, the petition of which shall be before the San Bernardino County Board of Education for a Fall 2017 opening.
In the interim, the Hi-Desert Cultural Center's immediate expansion of its after-school arts and technology programs and expansion of its facilities will bring a dramatic advancement in arts class offerings and academic educational support opportunities to local parents for their children beginning this September.  Not only will the program offer exceptional arts and technology classes during the after school time period, but the program is planning to also offer students who are taking the program's arts classes unique access to first-class home school core and supplemental academic resources.  The Cultural Center plans to further support the students who participate in the program's home school support element by making its facilities available for on-site academic tutoring, one-on-one arts instruction, and computer lab usage during the week.  Most of this year's expanded slate of arts and related technology classes will be offered on a semester basis or in some cases a shorter term for classes designed for younger children.  Classes may include: dance (hip-hop, latin, jazz/broadway), drama & musical theater (theater rep, classical training, multiple levels of drama, improv and more), music (theory, voice, guitar, piano, woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion), visual arts (2D and 3D including drawing, watercolor, oil, cartooning, ceramics & pottery), and theater technologies (light, sound, make-up/hair, and visual design & technical engineering).  The areas of academic tutoring will include math and core subjects as needed/available.
Both volunteers and paid staff are being sought.  If you are a professional or credentialed educator interested in joining the program's staff or if you are a skilled individual wishing to help as an integral volunteer or tutor, please send an email with your resumé or information on your focused area of expertise to  [email protected]. Paid positions will be commensurate with experience and class participation.  All individuals must pass a Live Scan and a Tuberculosis test.
If you are a parent interested in more information on the program's offerings, or if you are interested in donating to help financially support the program and provide scholarships for local youth, please send an email to [email protected].  As these significant educational offerings are being funded by the Cultural Center without public school funding, financial contributions to help offset costs are tremendously appreciated and will help ensure that more classes are able to be offered.  The Hi-Desert Cultural Center is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has served as the performing and visual arts center for the Joshua Tree National Park Gateway Communities for more than half a century (Federal Tax ID# 23-7425816).

Reach Out Morongo Basin

Reach Out Morongo Basin officials have begun gathering homes and sponsors for the 13th Annual Parade of Homes, set to take place Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017.  The annual event, which sees Reach Out Morongo Basin supporters from across the basin open their homes to curious visitors, is the Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors program's long running fundraiser bringing in thousands of dollars in ticket sales and sponsorships every year to support it's services to senior and disabled residents of the Morongo Basin.

"The generosity of owners who open their homes to us is what makes this event such a success" said Executive Director Robin Schlosser who continued "Growing interest and success in the recent past has homeowners eager to show their homes which range from renovated homestead cabins to astonishing architectural masterpieces. The unique qualities of each home showcase our desert community and way of life. Visitors on the tour view six homes in the Morongo Basin each with its own story."

Homeowners are urged to call Reach Out at 760-361-1410 for information or to volunteer their homes.

In addition organizers are looking for tour and media sponsors at the following levels:
--Platinum: $1,000 or more
The single platinum sponsor will receive top billing in all publicity about the home tour as well as listing on tickets, directional signs, advertising, fliers and posters and the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter.
The platinum sponsor also has the option of nominating one home for the tour, with the caveat that the home should be of historical or architectural interest and that the chairman reserves the right to choose homes for the tour.
Docents at each home will wear company shirts and hats, assuming they are supplied by the sponsor and will display company brochures during parade hours.
The platinum sponsor will receive 20 free tickets.
--Gold: $500 or more
Each gold sponsor will also be the floral centerpiece sponsor for one home on the tour, with their name featured prominently in the display.
Gold sponsors will also be listed in advertising, fliers, posters and on the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter and will receive eight free tickets.
--Silver: $250 or more
Silver sponsors will be listed in advertising, on fliers and posters and on the Reach Out Morongo Basin website and newsletter. They will receive four free tickets.
