They say one person's junk is another person's treasure. Nobody believes this more than Sandhi Schimmel Gold. Years ago, Sandhi became fascinated with the art of mosaic: creating grand images by piecing together small pieces of colored glass or stone. With no formal training, she taught herself the craft, but when she wanted to create intricate portraits, a lack of materials obstructed her path.
Her irritation soon turned to innovation when she realized that everything she needed was right at her doorstep. "Piles of it come every day...and it's free," she says. Her eureka moment led to what has now become a deep-rooted passion: making stunning mosaics out of tiny, vibrant pieces of common junk mail.
My Generation got an exclusive tour of Sandhi's studio and discovered how this self-made artist pieced together a craft all her own.
