We finished our 3rd workshop series with students at College Track in December of 2013. The participants wrote and performed some powerful poems that reflect their way of seeing the world. We saw tremendous growth. Everyone in attendance at their showcase was impressed with their work. Here is an excerpt from Shayla:

I will speak my voice

and let it be heard,

as I take these weights off of my back,

pound by pound.

Brick by brick,

I will dance my way up the mountain of success,

pushing, striving, working

to succeed.

If I know I can,

I will.

Feelings no longer suffer,

self-esteem on the rise.

Dance is the hidden voice of the soul.

My soul?

Well, my soul speaks loudly.

We look forward to continuing our workshop series at Denver Center for International Studies (through DPS Indian Education). The youth there have already written some strong lines in our short time together. The following is an excerpt from a participant's poem.

I am the tough and moist mixture
of mutton, green chile, onions, and frybread
that I get to enjoy only once a year.
I am the link between my unknown past and future,
reminding me of amazing times.
I come from a people I don't get to learn about.
I will never forget the experiences that connect me to total strangers,
with a common need.

Our workshops STRIVE Prep SMART HS also look very promising. We will share some lines from those students in the future.

In addition to returning to KIPP Denver Collegiate HS, we are excited to start working with students at STRIVE Prep Excel HS in 2014.

We will host a showcase featuring all of our workshop participants at our 1st Art in the Park of 2014 on June 13th at La Alma/Lincoln Park Amphitheater.

Make sure to read future newsletters for more updates.

As you step inside this workshop, you will learn how to express your thoughts and feelings through hip hop, poetry, and spoken word. We are extremely excited to provide you the space and time to give voice to your stories of love, struggle, injustice, and celebration. With our words, we can represent our culture(s) and tradition(s) as we strengthen our minds.

Basic Xpress Yourself Spoken Word Workshops for Youth

(photos of thank you letters/notes)

Recent partners for Cafe Cultura's basic workshops: Shaw Heights Middle School and Clayton Partnership School. We are confirming several more as the school year progresses.

If you are interested in having Cafe Cultura present at your school or organization, feel free to contact us. Our basic version is a one time, 1 to 2 hour session. We have used this highly engaging and culturally relevant workshop structure for over seven years to encourage Chicana/o and Native youth to use spoken word to give voice to our stories of love, struggle, injustice, and celebration. They serve to supplement and support Language Arts/English curriculum. Workshop structure was designed by a spoken word artist with 4 years experience teaching at the middle and high school level with contributions from other poets and youth advocates. Click here for a detailed information sheet.
