Senior Spotlight : Lauren Welch
An Article by Guidance Counselor Laura Pouliot With Contributions From Several Staff Members

Note: Each week in our newsletter we like to "spotlight" one senior student who makes contributions to our school community both in and out of the classroom. Students who will be spotlighted are interviewed in advance and staff members contribute to each article.

Lauren Welch is one extraordinary senior!  Laura Pouliot, Lauren's School Counselor, has thoroughly enjoyed watching her mature in to an extremely brave, trustworthy and principled young woman. Laura says about Lauren, "Lauren is a leader and an inspiration; she is an exceptionally friendly, self-aware person as well as a dogged worker who consciously values her education.  I greatly respect how Lauren practices the habit of expressing gratitude every day, especially for little things that should not be taken for granted in this world.  Lauren is also simply hysterical; she can bust out with an unexpected witty remark that will literally have the entire Counseling Office doubled over with laughter!  Lauren has shown some of the strongest determination and perseverance I've seen to make her school career an academic and social triumph.  Lauren is a role model to others in how she leads by example.  Her community volunteer work, fortitude in the classroom and generosity of spirit make her an admirable young woman."

Candice DeAngelis, who worked with Lauren in Spanish 3 and 4 honors, says "Lauren is a super star.  Her energy and smile are contagious and her sense of humor enchants a room.  She is trustworthy and genuine, always giving 110% towards every assignment that comes her way.  Lauren loves a challenge, the more challenging an assignment or task the better she does, she fully engages and once she gets going she is unstoppable.  Perhaps my most favorite quality of Lauren's is how personable she is.  She can relate well to most everyone and is kind, accepting and empathetic.  To Lauren: I have loved getting to know you, and am so proud of all that you have accomplished!"

Lauren has been an aid this past school year in the School Counseling Office, working closely with Diana Rooney.  Diana states, "Beside the fact that she is outgoing and fun to be around, she is dependable, professional, conscientious, and proficient.  She aspires to choose a career in the psychology area, and working in the Counseling Office has given her great insight to this profession.  One thing I've observed is her ability to be confidential with what she has been exposed to.  This is a tremendous characteristic to have as a high school student.   The Superintendent's Office is right around the corner, and I've had many of the staff comment on what a lovely and personable individual she is.  One of the traits I like the most is her honesty.  For instance, when she told me the office needed to be redecorated, she was correct; so, she made the office more student-friendly and what a difference it has made.  I have no doubt she will excel in all she does."
SRHS Announces SNHU Partnership That Produces 7 New College Credit Opportunities For Sanborn Students
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Sanborn Regional High School is excited to announce a new partnership with Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) that will significantly increase the number of college-credit opportunities available to its students.

For the 2016-2017 school year, Sanborn is participating in the SNHU In The High School Program, a dual enrollment program where Sanborn students can earn college credit while still in high school by taking Sanborn courses that have been approved by SNHU for both Sanborn and SNHU credit.

SNHU has approved seven current Sanborn courses and teachers for this program for next year:

Since these courses are already part of Sanborn's Program of Studies, registration will occur through the normal course selection process that Sanborn's Counseling Department is currently working on with all students. Students who wish to enroll in the college credit option with SNHU will have the option to do so when the class starts in the fall. The cost to students for the college credit option will be $100.00 per three credit course and $25.00 per one credit lab. This cost represents a savings of 90 percent of traditional undergraduate day tuition.

This SNHU partnership is a welcomed addition to the college-credit opportunities that are currently available to Sanborn students through one of the following programs:

Northern Essex Community College Dual Enrollment: Sanborn students can dually enroll in two courses: English Composition 1 and the College Success Seminar. Both courses are taught during the school day by NECC instructors.

Great Bay Community College Project Running Start: Sanborn students can dually enroll in up to four Sanborn courses that are eligible for GBCC credit: Drawing, Statistics, TAC Math, and Senior Critical Analysis. These courses are taught during the school day by Sanborn teachers.

Advanced Placement: In partnership with the College Board, Sanborn offers the following AP courses: Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Government, Language and Composition, Literature, Spanish, and US History. Students may earn college credit based on their score on an end-of-year exam, depending on which post-secondary school they enroll in. These courses are taught during the school day by Sanborn teachers.

Additionally, college credit opportunities are available to Sanborn students through the Seacoast School of Technology (SST) and the Virtual Learning Academy Charter School (VLACS).

Important Graduation Information For Seniors
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

To: Graduating Seniors
From: Brian M Stack, Principal

It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for Friday, June 10, 2016 . Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.

If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. If this is the case all attendees will need a ticket to enter the gym. The week of graduation you will receive six (6) admission tickets for the gymnasium ceremony. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 6 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than six.
The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the "probationary" graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to Mr. Stack to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Seniors: Call For Graduation Event Speakers
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Sanborn Regional High School is looking for students to deliver speeches for three graduation-related events: Scholarship Night, Class Day, and Graduation.

Who is eligible to apply?

All students in the Class of 2016 are encouraged to apply to be a student speaker at one of these events provided the student meets the three qualifications below.

  1. The student must be in good academic standing and on track to graduate with their class (no failing course grades or IWS grades) throughout the senior year.
  2. As a role model, the student may not have any major discipline infractions during their senior year (anything Level IV or above according to the student handbook is considered a major infraction) throughout the senior year.
  3. Have no more than 10 unexcused* absences to school throughout the senior year. *All absences are considered unexcused unless the school has documentation for a medical issue.

What kind of speech is appropriate to submit?

Students are encouraged to submit a speech for consideration at a graduation-related event. When deciding what topic or topics to focus the speech on, students should consider the following question: What key message or messages would I want given to me as a graduate at this ceremony? Although there is no official minimum or maximum length, an ideal speech would be between 500-750 words and would take approximately 5-7 minutes to deliver.

When is the speech due?

Students should send an electronic copy of their speech to Mr. Stack at his email address: bstack@sau17.org NO LATER THAN Friday May 6, 2016

What process will be used to select the winning speeches?

After May 6, Mr. Stack will turn over all the speeches to a jury of faculty members who will review them. This committee will select the speeches that have the most appropriate theme or message as semi-finalists. This review will be done blindly (no student names will be attached to the speeches). As part of this review, semi-finalist students may be asked to deliver a live version of their speech to the committee. The committee will identify the strongest public speakers and these students will be named finalists and offered the opportunity to deliver their speech at Scholarship Night, Class Day, or Graduation.
