Senior Spotlight : Shannon Mooney
An Article By Principal Brian M. Stack

Shannon knows when she walks across the stage at graduation, she won't have any regrets about how she spent her time at Sanborn Regional High School. This senior stand-out will be leaving her mark in the classroom, on the athletic field, and on the performance stage. Shannon leaves Sanborn with so many positive memories and she is looking forward to starting the next chapter of her life.

In the classroom, Shannon is a hard worker. She asks questions, she reflects on her own work, and she is always trying to do better. Shop teacher Jack Kelly described Shannon as a student in this way: Shannon has demonstrated remarkable maturity and leadership at Sanborn.  She is one of the students that I use to model appropriate behavior because the other students look up to her.  Academically Shannon is tenacious, when she gets involved with something she follows it through to completion.  She is an energetic and disciplined student.  These traits will serve her well next year in college. On a personal note, she is trustworthy, dependable, honest and reliable.  We will miss her presence and leadership next year at Sanborn, but she will be an asset to the University of Tampa.

Shannon has been an active participant in a number of school organizations including Basketball, Diversity Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Band, and Chorus.

This fall, Shannon will begin her college career at the University of Tampa. Although she will enter as an undecided major, she is looking at everything from things like Marine Biology to Psychology. We have no doubt with her drive, determination, and love for life, she will be a very successful graduate for the Class of 2015. We wish her the very best in her future, and we thank her for all she has done to make our school community a better place!

Senior Spotlight : Sofia Kruger
An Article By Principal Brian M. Stack

Sofia has big plans in life. While in high school she has had the opportunity to travel to some very remote locations around the globe. Visions of seeing communities of families living in cardboard boxes with little or no access to food and fresh water have left a scar on her soul. She wants to help solve the problem of global poverty. For those who know Sofia well, this goal would come as no surprise. Sofia is one of the most self-less, compassionate, and giving students in the Class of 2015.

Sofia is a student in excellent academic standing. Her teachers describe her as smart, passionate, and creative. French teacher Dee Dunbar-Hambucken, who has had the privilege of having Sofia in class for the last four years, described her as a student in this way: Sofia is one of the hardest working kids I have.  Her level of concentration is phenomenal, and it shows in the results I've seen over the past four years.  Some of the grammatical concepts have not come easily to her, but she never complains; she just asks for clarification.  I know that Sofia will do amazing things with her life since she combines her focus and inquisitive nature with a kindness and caring that are beyond a typical teenager.  Let us not forget, however, that she has an amazing sense of humor, and a laugh that is infectious!  I've been so fortunate to have had Sofia in my classes these throughout her years at Sanborn.  I'll miss her!

Social Studies teacher Jerry Wolbert added this about Sofia: I've had the privilege of having Sofia in all of the subjects that I teach.  She works super-hard, is always conscientious of her work and not afraid to speak her mind on issues that she feels passionate about, plus she's really smart!  The perfect student for any Social Studies class.  I will miss seeing her in my classes.

Outside of the classroom, Sofia is involved in a number of school activities. She has been a member of the school's soccer and track teams (both indoor and outdoor). She is a member of both the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society. She has been a Class Council member for all four years of high school, serving for two years as Treasurer and this past year as Public Relations Officer.

This fall, Sofia will attend St. Michael's College in Vermont where she plans to double major in Anthropology and Sociology with a minor in Global Studies. After college, she hopes to be able to work for an organization like UNICEF so that she can travel the world, helping people. We have no doubt with Sofia's grit and determination, she will certainly leave her mark on humanity in many ways. We wish her the very best of luck in her future!

Senior Spotlight : Taela Leek
An Article By English Teacher Evan Czyzowski

As the valedictorian of the class of 2015, Taela Leek has risen above her peers. Her literal height is matched only by her stature as a scholar, an athlete, and an actor. During her time at Sanborn, she pushed herself to take the hardest classes, performed in lead roles in the school plays, and played on the basketball team all four years. She also took advantage of Sanborn trips to Spain and Italy.

What is most impressive about Taela is the fact that she takes life for all it's worth. You will never find her watching life from the sidelines-Taela, seizes every opportunity to create her own path. At Sanborn, when we use the words GRIT and determination, we can look to Taela as a role model. She will be the first to tell you that all her hard work, late nights studying and rehearsing and practicing have made her a better person. Those are her words, "...Made me a better person."

Spanish Teacher Tony Kinsley says this about her: "Taela Leek is smart, talented, kind, honest ... the list of adjectives could go on and on and I would run out of paper. But if there is something that I would like to highlight, it is her common sense, ironically the least common of all senses. She seems to be able to effortlessly find that Golden Mean that The Philosopher told us about, and for that among many other things, I deeply admire her."

She questions every situation relentlessly and with genuine curiosity. She knows that the answers to those why-questions will make the world a better place and she understands that we are counting on her to do just that.

Spanish Teacher Candice DeAngelis describes Taela this way: "From the first time I met Taela I was impressed.  She is intelligent, funny, and inquisitive.  When teaching a class with Taela as a student you can be assured that she will come up with thought provoking questions that create some of the best teachable moments.  Taela is not afraid to ask why, which will lead her to some amazing opportunities in her future.  Taela is creative, even in another language.  She has written and spoken detailed stories and narratives in Spanish that surpass and exceed all expectations.  Taela is also a hard worker.  Rarely with a free moment, she throws herself into her academics, drama, sports and other activities 100%.  I am more than thrilled for Taela as she begins her new journey, she will excel, because that is just what Taela does!"

In the Fall, Taela will attend the University of New Hampshire to study nursing and we should all breathe a sigh of relief knowing that that Taela will be making the world a better place. The world in which Taela is helping us will be a better world.

SRHS To Run Extended FLT Days June 15-18
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Dear Parents/Guardians of Sanborn Regional High School Grade 9-11 Students,

In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to obtain full credit for all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on the last four days of school, June 15-18. On these days, we will run an extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) period from 11:55AM - 2:10PM. FLT is offered as part of our regular schedule each day for 40 minutes and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. During these end-of-year extended FLT periods, teachers will be available to work with students on projects for competency recovery.  Students will also be able to begin the work on credit recovery courses if needed.

Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students not passing a competency in one or more of their courses. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity for teacher supported competency recovery that will not be available over the summer.  If students are not able to make up the competency/credit at the end of the year, they will likely have to repeat the class next school year.

Students who are passing all of their competencies will not be required to stay for these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10PM.

Click here to view the bell schedule that will be used for these days.

Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher(s) at (603) 642-3341.

Coming Soon to a School Near You: The New SAT
A Blog Article by Principal Brian M. Stack

With the introduction of the Common Core and the move by many high schools and colleges towards proficiency and competency based assessment systems in recent years, focus in the educational community has now turned to one of the rites of passages that many high school juniors and seniors still face: college entrance exams like the SAT.

Back in March of 2014, the College Board announced that it would be developing a new SAT which would debut in March of 2016. The new test would have a larger focus on skills such as on citing evidence to support answers, coverage of fewer math topics, and a move to an optional essay section. On the College Board website, they note eight key changes with the new SAT:

  1. There will be a focus on relevant words in context. Students will be asked to interpret the meaning of words based on the context of the passage in which they appear.
  2. Students will need a command of evidence. They will be asked to demonstrate their ability to interpret, synthesize, and use evidence found in a wide range of sources.
  3. Students will complete an essay analyzing a source. They will read a passage and explain how the author builds an argument to persuade an audience.
  4. Students will focus on math that matters most. Math concepts will be based on three major areas: Problem Solving and Data Analysis, the Heart of Algebra, and Passport to Advanced Math.
  5. Students will focus on problems grounded in real-world contexts. In reading, Students will be asked to edit and revise to improve texts from the humanities, history, social science, and career contexts. In math, students will complete multistep applications to solve problems in science, social science, career scenarios, and other real-life contexts
  6. Students will apply their reading, writing, language, and math skills to perform analysis in science, history, and social studies.
  7. Students will be asked to engage with a passage from a founding document like the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers to conduct close reading and reflect on and deeply engage with issues and concerns central to informed citizenship.
  8. Students will not be penalized for wrong answers.

SAT Test prep services like Kaplan and the Princeton Review have already released updated resources and materials to help students prepare for this new test. Kaplan has dedicated a section of their website to helping students who plan to graduate in high school navigate the new test. The Princeton Review has built a similar website. Earlier this month, in a bold move, the College Board announced that it would roll out a free online test prep developed in conjunction with Kahn Academy. The interactive software will allow users to get customized feedback on their performance as they work through the material by having them take short pre-tests and complete instructional lessons designed to explain problems that they had difficulty with. The software will also include access to video lessons and reference articles as additional instructional resources. The software is available through this website

.

The College Board is hedging their bets that the new SAT will be a better measure of what students know and are able to do, which will ultimately lead to a better indicator of how well students will be college and career ready.
