Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

Winter Carnival Rescheduled to THIS WEEK
This Reschedule is a Result of the Lost Schools Days Before February Vacation

Dear Sanborn Community:

The week before vacation when we had multiple school closures due to snow on the roof, members of the Student Council met with Mrs. Price and Mr. Stack to discuss the lost days from Winter Carnival week. It was decided to postpone Winter Carnival to the week after February vacation. We will count the activities from this past Monday, but the activities and events that were previously scheduled for Tuesday-Friday February 17-20 will run from Tuesday-Friday March 3-6, with the big pep rally happening on Friday March 6.

Thank you for your understanding and for showing your Sanborn P.R.I.D.E!

8th Grade Comes to SRHS For Foreseeable Future
The Move is a Result of a Failed Section of Roof at SRMS

At the February 18, 2015 School Board meeting, Dr. Blake formally announced that a section of roof above the 8th grade wing has failed under the heavy weight of snow this past winter. The District will repair the roof, but the repair may take a couple of months. Until that time, SRMS 8th grade students would need to be relocated to SRHS.

Mr. Stack, Mr. Rutherford, and their administrative teams developed a plan to relocate the 8th grade to the current World Language / Humanities classroom wing, rooms 101-111 on the first floor. High school teachers who currently occupy that classroom wing will be relocated to other classroom spaces in the building.

On Monday, March 2, all SRHS students will report to advisory at the beginning of the day to receive an updated copy of their schedule, which will contain any updated room numbers for classes that have moved. Other than some classroom changes, there will be no significant impact to high school students or staff as a result of this move other than some minor buses. Click here to review the revised bus routes, with a change to route 11.

8th grade students will operate "in a bubble" while they are at SRHS. They will have their own bell schedule, eat lunch as a grade, and will generally have little to no contact with high school students during the school day. The only time they will generally see high school students is before and after school, as it is planned for 8th grade students to ride on high school buses.

Mr. Stack, Mrs. Hadwen, and Mr. Turmelle ask that as a high school community, we welcome the middle school teachers and students and help them to feel at home.

Senior Spotlight : Emma Dolan
An Article By Principal Brian M. Stack

Emma Dolan, the President of Sanborn's Class of 2015, plans to leave this school community better than when she found it fours years ago as a freshman. Emma has been elected by her peers to serve in the role of Class President for each of her four years in high school. Her tenure as President was one that will have a lasting impact on our school community. Emma's class was the first to usher in a new era in our school culture, the first to implement the Freshman Learning Community model, a model that won a national School Board award in Emma's freshman year.

Emma is a student in excellent academic standing. Her transcript shows that she has challenged herself with a variety of college prep and honors-leveled courses tat will help her with her future goal of a career in criminology and/or psychology. In the classroom, her teachers report that she is an excellent student. Psychology teacher Michelle Wheeler had this to say about Emma as a student: Emma is a leader and a team player simultaneously. This is evident in and out of the classroom, from working in small groups on class projects  to spearheading her class during Winter Carnival activities. Emma always looks for the positive in things and works with others to achieve consensus toward a common goal with great results.

Sociology teacher Jerry Wolbert added this about Emma: Emma has exceptional leadership skills, whether she realizes it or not, her peers look up to her and rely on her to make difficult decisions.  Her calm demeanor is an attribute that will help her succeed as she moves forward.  I've enjoyed her presence in my classes during her junior and senior year and I know she will do great things as she moves forward.

Talking about her qualities as a leader, Student Council adviser Holly Price described Emma in this way: I have known Emma for 4 years as  both a classroom teacher and as the student council advisor.  She is a hardworking student, always striving to do her best.  She has been the class president for 4 years and I have found her to be an exceptional  dedicated and creative student leader.   She has been a pleasure to work with.

This coming fall, Emma would like to study criminology or psychology in college. Her list of schools that she is interested in included UMass Lowell and Amherst, Keene State, the University of Southern Maine, Merrimack College, and the University of Rhode Island. We have no doubt that with her grit and determination, she will go very far in life. We wish her the best of luck!

Seniors Are Encouraged To Submit a Graduation Speech
Speeches Are Due By Monday May 4 to Mr. Stack

This past fall, it was announced to all seniors that Sanborn Regional High School would start a new tradition to select student speakers for graduation-related events such as Commencement, Class Day, and Scholarship Night. Speaking at one of these events is considered an honor and a privilege and is therefore reserved for the very best student speakers that our school has.

Who is eligible to apply?

All students in the Class of 2015 are encouraged to apply to be a student speaker at one of these events provided the student meets the three qualifications below.

  1. The student must be in good academic standing and on track to graduate with their class (no failing course grades or IWS grades) throughout the senior year.
  2. As a role model, the student may not have any major discipline infractions during their senior year (anything Level IV or above according to the student handbook is considered a major infraction) throughout the senior year.
  3. Have no more than 10 unexcused* absences to school throughout the senior year. *All absences are considered unexcused unless the school has documentation for a medical issue.

What kind of speech is appropriate to submit?

Students are encouraged to submit a speech for consideration at one of the graduation-related events. When deciding what topic or topics to focus the speech on, students should consider the following question: What key message or messages would I want given to me as a graduate at this ceremony? Although there is no official minimum or maximum length, an ideal speech would be between 500-750 words and would take approximately 5-7 minutes to deliver.

When is the speech due?

Students should return this form and an electronic copy of this speech to Mr. Stack at his email address: bstack@sau17.org NO LATER THAN Monday, May 4 (the day after April vacation).

What process will be used to select the winning speeches?

After May 4, Mr. Stack will turn over all the speeches to a jury of faculty members who will review them. The committee will select the speeches that have the most appropriate theme or message as semi-finalists. This review will be done blindly (no student names will be attached to the speeches). From there, semi-finalist students will be asked to deliver a live version of their speech to the committee. The committee will identify the strongest public speakers and these students will be named finalists and offered the opportunity to deliver their speech at a graduation-related event. The committee will determine which speeches will be delivered at which events.

How Does Your School Use Social Media to Connect With Families?
An Article by Brian M. Stack

As I was walking down the hall the other day, I was struck by some recent student artwork that had been posted by one of our art teachers recently. I took a few pictures of them on my phone and quickly uploaded them to our Sanborn Regional High School Facebook page with a caption that read "check out some of the latest pieces of art by students in Ms. Ladd's class!" I regularly post pictures and quick updates like this to our school's Facebook several times a day. These updates, combined with posts of links to blog articles and our weekly newsletter help our families stay connected to our school community. Social Media, with sites like Twitter and Facebook specifically, have dramatically helped our school improve its public relations image with our community and provide our families with real-time communication on upcoming events and important issues.

Our school might be a great example for what EdTech's Matt Renwick recently described in his article Is Facebook the New School Web Page? Renwick reported that Facebook users are nearing 1.35 billion world-wide. Years ago, home Internet access varied community by community and household to household, but now with the rise of smart phone technology, even socioeconomic status is rarely a barrier to Internet usage. The reality is, in most schools, it is fair to say that all but a handful of families have access to social media like Facebook.

Renwick's article talked about how easy it can be for a classroom teacher to set up a classroom account and ensure student privacy and safety. They simply must create the site using professional email to keep it separate from a personal account, obtain parent permission to post student images and worked with a school-approved form, get the word out about the classroom Facebook page through newsletters and in person, and provide a link or feed of the Facebook page on the classroom web page.

Renwick also talked about how the social media giant can help a school district communicate. He used the Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools as an example. This district created a Facebook page to deliver announcements and showcase school learning. Colleen Dickmann, superintendent for Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools, told Renwick, "Using social media allows us, as a school district, to tell our story in the manner we want it told. We can publish stories that otherwise might not make it into the local media's hands."

Using social media in a school is not a new concept, nor is Facebook the only way to communicate. A year ago, writer Mark Guay offered 3 Reasons Why the School Principal Needs to Tweet in a HuffPost Education article. First, he says that students need good social media role models to help their learn how to use social media appropriately. Second, he points out that social media is free, and free works in every school budget! Lastly, he says that Twitter, and other social media options like Facebook and Pinterest, offer school leaders a way to efficiently share the good news of all the things happening in a school community.

For those who argue that social media doesn't fit with their school or school district's policies, consider this. Back in 2011, ASCD's Laura Varlas asked the question, "Can Social Media and School Policies be Friends? There, Varlas talked about federal legislation that has been passed that allows the two to coexist, specifically the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and the Children's Internet Protection Act

.

So, classroom teachers and school principals, what are you waiting for? It's time for you to like some status updates, pin some pictures, and follow some hash tags. Social Media is a great way to keep your families connected with your classroom and your school. What are you waiting for?

We hope you all have a great week!
