Senior Spotlight : Sophie Smith
An Article by Guidance Counselor Laura Pouliot With Contributions From Several Staff Members

Note: Each week in our newsletter we like to "spotlight" one senior student who makes contributions to our school community both in and out of the classroom. Students who will be spotlighted are interviewed in advance and staff members contribute to each article.

Sophie Smith is a senior who is best described as studious, focused, determined and persistent, almost to a fault.  Laura Pouliot, Sophie's School Counselor says about Sophie, "She is a sweet, genuine young lady who does what she thinks is right and describes herself as an 'independent thinker', unafraid to say or do what is in her heart.  She does an impressive job of maintaining a quiet humility about her abilities that reflects the solid moral fiber of a well-grounded individual.
Sophie stood out rather immediately as a freshman when she and two other girls wrote and produced a dramatic 10-minute public service announcement for their Modern Media class about the dangers of texting while driving.  Even though it was three years ago, it is still so impressive, it's worth taking the time to watch even now!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3_ov_9k774     Sophie recalls the brainstorming for this project stemming from a sincere desire to make a difference in the quality of life of her peers.  It is that same genuine place of caring from which Sophie approaches all of her endeavors.  Sophie is an extremely focused and determined young lady whose sense of self and empathy for others will support her success in college and beyond.
Tony Kinsley, Sophie's AP Spanish teacher comments, "Sophie always works hard and consistently in order to succeed despite the challenges she might find on her way. Besides being an excellent student, Sophie is also a great athlete, being a valued member of our soccer team. I had the opportunity of being her coach for two years and always have been impressed by her natural talent and dedication. She really enjoys sports and takes them very seriously both in practice and on the field. She is a quiet leader that leads by example and is an excellent role model for her peers. But overall and most important, Sophie is an excellent human being with a heart of gold that always has a smile on her face and never a mean word to anyone."

In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to obtain full credit for all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on the last three days of school, June 13-15. On these days, we will run an extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) period from 10:35AM - 2:10PM.

FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day for 40 minutes and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. During these end-of-year extended FLT periods, t eachers will be available to work with students on projects for competency recovery.  Students will also be able to begin the work on credit recovery courses if needed.

Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students not passing a competency in one or more of their courses. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity for teacher supported competency recovery that will not be available over the summer.  If students are not able to make up the competency/credit at the end of the year, they will likely have to repeat the class next school year.
Students who are passing all of their competencies will not be required to stay for these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10PM.
Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher(s) at (603) 642-3341.

The schedule for the days at the end of the year will be as follows on the next page.

Please contact the office at (603) 642-3341 if you have any questions about this plan.
Holocaust Presentation given by Holocaust Survivor and Students
A Message by Program Organizer English Teacher Evan Czyzowski

For the 5th year in a row, Sanborn Regional High School will be hosting an all-day presentation for the entire junior class to give them an in-depth study of the Holocaust. The junior year English and history curriculum includes WWII and the novel Night by Elie Wiesel, which chronicles his survival through the Holocaust. The full-day event included a screening of Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List followed by presentations from guest speaker Kati Preston, Holocaust Survivor (see bio below) and a student presentation about their recent experience touring Auschwitz and Poland.

English teacher Evan Czyzowski organizes this event each year with the past help of Tom White of the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College. What is unique about the event this year is that Czyzowski, whose father is from Poland, has just returned from Poland where he led a school trip of 10 student and 2 teachers to better understand this difficult period of history. Students and teachers toured the Jewish Heritage Museum, walked along the old Jewish Ghetto Wall, visited the Warsaw Uprising Museum, went to Oscar Schindler's Factory, and toured Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Most of the students on the trip were inspired to go to these places based on seeing the Sanborn presentation last year.
Sanborn students will literally interact with history as they listen to and ask questions of Mrs. Preston who experienced and witnessed these very events.  The students who attended the trip will present their experiences to the entire Junior class after Mrs. Preston's presentation. Please see Mrs. Preston's biography included below.
Kati Preston Bio:
Kati Preston was a hidden child, survivor of the Holocaust.
As a child in Hungary, she was saved by a simple peasant woman who hid her in the hay of the loft of a barn in a village. Her whole Jewish family of twenty-eight souls perished in Auschwitz.
As many survivors, she spent her years trying to achieve and justify her life. After successful carreers in journalism, fashion design, and establishing an educational touring theater, she realized that what matters most, is educating and speaking against hate and prejudice.
In the last few years, as there are so few survivors still alive, she finds her need to speak out much more urgent. She speaks in schools, universities, synagogues, churches, museums, libraries, and anywhere people are willing to listen.
Recently, she was honored with the Susan J. Herman award for leadership in Holocaust and Genocide Awareness presented by The Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College.
Kati has written a book about her life: "Holocaust to Healing: Closing the Circle" and is working on an illustrated book for middle-schools.
Her activism prompted her town, Barnstead, NH, to pass a resolution that no person shall ever be required to state their religion on any official documents. Other towns have expressed interest in implementing similar resolutions.
Kati speaks about her experiences growing up after the tragedy of losing her family, but her focus is being a survivor and not a victim. She is a mother to four sons, grandmother to four girls, and has a message of hope, survival, and triumph over evil. Her optimism leaves her audiences energized to stand up, fight against hate, and to improve their world.

Important Graduation Information For Seniors
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

To: Graduating Seniors
From: Brian M Stack, Principal

It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for Friday, June 10, 2016 . Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.

If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. If this is the case all attendees will need a ticket to enter the gym. The week of graduation you will receive six (6) admission tickets for the gymnasium ceremony. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 6 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than six.
The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the "probationary" graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to Mr. Stack to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Please note the mandatory activities and graduation practices on June 9 and 10.
