SRSD Strategic Planning Survey
The Community is Asked To Give Feedback As SRSD Builds Its New Strategic Plan

Greetings Sanborn Community,

The Sanborn Regional School District is currently developing the next strategic plan.  A community forum was held in the library of the Sanborn Regional High School on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

During the meeting, attendees were given the opportunity to "weigh in" on 6 different focus areas for the new strategic plan.  We would like to offer the community the opportunity to also provide input into these focus areas as well.  Please take a few minutes to complete the survey by envisioning what steps it will take to successfully complete each of the focus areas.

Click here to take the survey now.

Senior Spotlight : Prudence "PJ" Ross
An Article by Principal Brian M. Stack With Contributions From Several Staff Members

Note: Each week in our newsletter we like to "spotlight" one senior student who makes contributions to our school community both in and out of the classroom. Students who will be spotlighted are interviewed in advance and staff members contribute to each article.

She is a stellar student and a stellar athlete. She gives back to her community and contributes positively to improving our school culture and climate. These are just some of the ways that many in our school community have come to know PJ Ross.

In the classroom, PJ is one of the strongest students in the senior class. She is always up for a challenge, and this year her demanding course schedule includes three AP Classes (Calculus, Chemistry, and Government) as well as French 5, honors Chemistry, and two other electives in Financial Skills for You and Psychology. Her teachers describe her as a hard-worker who is always looking to put her best foot forward. French teacher Dee Hambucken spoke very highly of PJ, describing her as a student in this way: PJ has stood out in all levels of French since before even coming to the high school. I remember Mrs. Morrissette telling me that she was a dream student, and she was right. She has always been quirky and funny, but she also has a quick wit, inquisitive nature, an enviable memory, and a love of literary classics that would make any bibliophile proud!  There is no grammatical concept that PJ has not been able to tackle quickly, and without complaint.  In French V, PJ's capacity to read challenging, authentic material in French has been a joy to behold. She is truly remarkable.  I will miss having PJ in class next year, but I'm extremely excited that she will be at Brandeis in the fall, as she will amaze a new group of people.

Social Studies teacher Brian Gray added this about PJ: PJ can always be counted on to push herself to be the best student she can be. Her constant search for knowledge is refreshing in class, and her contributions to class always benefit the teacher and the students. She is the type of student who will learn about a subject in class, go home and research more about it and come in the next day to have a poignant discussion with you about the topic. As a high school student, she is worldly, compassionate and more knowledgeable than any of her peers.

Outside of the classroom, PJ is involved in a number of outside activities. She is active in the school's Key Club and Life of a Student program. She is also a "12 Season Athlete," a distinct honor reserved for the few who pursue a sport every season at Sanborn from grades 9-12. PJ has done soccer, basketball, and softball for the school. Additionally, she is a member of a softball club team that is based out of Bedford, NH.

Next year, PJ has committed to Brandeis University where she will play D3 softball and study business management. We know that with her drive and determination, she will be successful in everything that she pursues!

Sanborn BudCom Begins Planning for FY 2018 Budget Proposal
A Message From BudCom Chair Annie Collyer

Did You Know...the Sanborn Regional School District (SRSD) Budget Committee (BudCom) is already working on the budget for Fiscal Year 2018?

The BudCom is responsible to propose a budget for the schools. BudCom will be thoroughly scrutinizing the District budget over coming months.

The first step for BudCom this year is a deep look at the existing budget versus actual expenses, line by line.  This is beginning now.

The next step is to work with the Administration Department Heads and the SB to hear the proposed goals, measurements and costs to SRSD to deliver learning to the children of the District. This, too, is beginning now.

At the latest Budcom meeting on May 12, School Board Chairman Corey Masson gave an overview of how they will be setting and evaluating their goals and costs over the balance of this year. Then the SRSD Department Heads will be making proposed budget presentations in September and October, culminating in the Administration's proposed overall budget presentation by Dr. Blake in early November.

After evaluation of this input, Budcom prepares the budget to present to the voters they represent. The process at SRSD is called SB2, where the voters decide the budget in two sessions. The first Session is called the Deliberative Session and takes place in February of each year. Budcom presents the proposed budget for debate, and sometimes amendment, by the voters present.  This is an important annual meeting for voters to plan to attend. Voters in New Hampshire have an enormous voice on their budgets, similar to the old town hall meetings, at this session.
The next and final vote is at the polls in March.

BudCom will be setting its mission and goals at their next meeting on Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 PM. Public comments are welcomed in person or by email to ACollyer@Sau17.org.

Sanborn Librarian Wins State Award
Congratulations to Pam Harland!

Pam Harland of Sanborn Regional High School has been selected for the New Hampshire School Library Media Association's Service Award. The NHSLMA Service Award is presented to a NHSLMA member who has served the profession and the organization in an exemplary and unselfish manner. Award recipients will have made a significant statewide impact on the library/media profession through service to NHSLMA members.

This year's recipient of the service award embodies the word service. She has spent much of her career not only serving her school community, but in service to the greater school library profession. She has served many years on both the NHSLMA board and the conference committee including serving as the NHSLMA president and representing NHSLMA on the Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference steering committee.  She has supported the professional growth of many librarians through her conference presentations, journal publications, and her book on the Learning Commons. She advocates for school librarians at the national level in her role as the Region 1 Regional Director and mentors upcoming librarians as a Graduate Teaching Lecturer at Plymouth State University and by hosting practicum students at her school. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Pam Harland for her service to the New Hampshire School Library Media Association by presenting her with this year's service award.

The NHSLMA Service award winner was announced on May 13 at the NHSLMA Annual Conference at the Grappone Center in Concord.

In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to obtain full credit for all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on the last three days of school, June 13-15. On these days, we will run an extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) period from 10:35AM - 2:10PM.

FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day for 40 minutes and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. During these end-of-year extended FLT periods, t eachers will be available to work with students on projects for competency recovery.  Students will also be able to begin the work on credit recovery courses if needed.

Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students not passing a competency in one or more of their courses. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity for teacher supported competency recovery that will not be available over the summer.  If students are not able to make up the competency/credit at the end of the year, they will likely have to repeat the class next school year.
Students who are passing all of their competencies will not be required to stay for these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10PM.
Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher(s) at (603) 642-3341.

The schedule for the days at the end of the year will be as follows on the next page.

Please contact the office at (603) 642-3341 if you have any questions about this plan.

You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than six.
