Senior Spotlight : Monique Ricard
An Article by Principal Brian M. Stack With Contributions From Several Staff Members

Mr. Stack's Note: Each week I like to "spotlight" one senior student who makes contributions to our school community both in and out of the classroom. Students who will be spotlighted are interviewed in advance and staff members contribute to each article.

The Sanborn community is going to lose a shining star when Monique graduates, but her legacy will live on for many years to come because she has become such a positive part of many aspects in our school.

Academically, Monique is a very strong student who has an extremely demanding senior course load with classes such as Astronomy, AP US Government, AP Calculus, Physics, Astronomy, Ceramics, French IV, and Running Start Senior English. Her teachers describe her as a student who never settles for anything less than her best. French teacher Dee Hambucken described Monique as a student in this way:

I've been so fortunate to have had Monique every year since she was a freshman, and it has been a pleasure to see her grow throughout the years in French class. Monique is truly a delight because she is a strong character. She says what she thinks, and I applaud her for that. I know that if something is unclear, Monique will let me know without hesitation, which benefits her classmates, to boot.

Last Spring I had the pleasure of traveling with Monique to France during Spring Break, and she seemed right at home. Her personal flair allowed her to fit right in with the locals, both in Paris, and on the Côte d'Azur. As always, Monique was completely present in every moment, taking it all in, basking in the sun, and learning.

Monique is intellectually bright, and she combines this with a strong work ethic. French is sometimes challenging, but she has persevered and is still going strong. I know that as this year evolves, she will continue to be an animated addition to the classroom, bringing her style and wit to all that she does. Her force in the classroom is undeniable, and I cannot imagine the void that she will leave in the French program when she graduates.
Outside of the classroom, Monique has been involved in a variety of school activities from tennis to student council to Youth in Government. Most notably, however, Monique has given her heart and soul to the drama program, with her favorite showing being the Musical Murder Mysteries of the 1940's.

After high school, Monique hopes to attend college at either the University of New Hampshire or Towson University to study business management with a minor in political science. Her dream career is to work for the government and be part of a political campaign. We have no doubt with her drive and determination she will accomplish these and any other goals she sets for herself in her future!

The council will be accepting donations starting on December 1st. Each day involves something different. The items that you can bring in each day are as follows:
December 1st: Toys
December 2nd: Jackets & Snow pants
December 3rd: Cans
December 4th: Books
December 7th: Socks & Slippers
December 8th: Blankets
December 9th: Clothing items
December 10th: Animal food & Products
December 11th: Holiday Decorations
December 14th: Wrapping Paper
December 15th: School Supplies

The Student Council loves running this event because it allows them to get others involved and gives them the opportunity to give back to the community. If you have any items that you would like to drop off, bring them to the school during the school day. There will be collections boxes when you enter the building for easy drop off, as well as by the nurse's office. If you have any questions, contact [email protected] .

SRHS Teacher Wins State Technology Award
Congratulations to Mr. Gray!

This past week, Sanborn Regional High School Social Studies teacher Brian Gray learned that he has been named the 2016 New Hampshire Society for Technology in Education (NHSTE) Pat Keyes Technology - Using Educator Award winner. This award is given annually to one New Hampshire educator who has developed effective units integrating educational technology, demonstrated improved student performance with application of technology, and shared ideas and initiatives in formal and informal arenas using traditional and electronic methods.

Principal Brian M. Stack recognized that Gray's background and use of technology is "second to none" at Sanborn. He described him as a "willing early adopter of new technology tools in the classroom who takes the time to test them, trouble shoot them, and then train other staff members to use them. The school's recent successes with a number of software and hardware technology tools can be attributed in some way to Brian Gray."

Librarian Pam Harland added, " In addition to integrating practical and cutting-edge technology into his Social Studies curriculum, Brian also co-teaches Modern Media where he integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, world events, community activities, statistics, art, theatre, photography, media, and technology into the units. He works with Freshmen and upperclassmen all in one classroom, facilitating their learning while inspiring their independence."

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Brian J. Blake added that Mr. Gray has taken the use of technology in the classroom to a whole new level.  Constantly pushing the limits of the uses of technology, he has raised the bard for both staff and students alike.  I'm very proud to have Mr. Gray as a member of my team.

December 2 Early Release Moved to November 30
A Message From Dr. Brian Blake, Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I am writing to let you know about a change in our school calendar coming up at the end of November. We have an early release day scheduled for Wednesday, December 2, 2015. We are moving the early release day to Monday November 30, 2015.

The reason for the change in the calendar is to accommodate the Lawrence W. O'Toole Award ceremony. Following the dismissal of students, the staff will be attending the awards ceremony at the Sanborn Regional High School. In addition to representatives from the Nellie Mae Foundation, numerous dignitaries including the Governor, Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Education, and local politicians will be attending. Due to space limitations, there will be limited seating available to the community. In light of that, we will be filming the event and posting it to our website for public viewing.

The Lawrence W. O'Toole Award of $100,000 will help us to continue our work in competency based education and personalized learning. We are exploring a variety of opportunities to enhance the educational opportunities that we provide here at Sanborn.

I thank you for your understanding and flexibility. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact my office.

Information on the Student Assistance Counselor Program
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack

Sanborn Regional High School is implementing a Student Assistance Program for the 2015-2016 school year. This program is federally funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration's (SAMHSA) Partnership for Success II grant. The goals of the program are to prevent and reduce alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and to improve school performance and school culture. To accomplish these goals, students will have the opportunity to participate in school-wide awareness programs, classroom discussions, extracurricular activities (such as leadership and non-user groups), small groups and individual meetings to correct erroneous perceptions about substance use and learn skills to identify and resist social and situational pressures to use substances. The program will also provide a procedure for early identification of students who are experiencing or who are at high risk for alcohol and other drug related problems.

Amanda Fuller has returned to serve as the Student Assistance Counselor and will be responsible for implementing the prevention and education activities and will be available to meet with students individually and in groups during the school day. Additionally, Amanda will serve as an additional support to all students who, for a variety of reasons, are experiencing personal problems that may be affecting their academic and behavioral success in school. Amanda has a Masters degree in Social Work, previous experience in working with adolescents, and specialized training in prevention and early intervention strategies. If you are concerned that your child is in a situation that might increase his/her risk for alcohol and other drug use and would like to speak to the Student Assistance Counselor and/or have the Student Assistance Counselor see your child, please call her directly at 642-3600 x116. All calls will be confidential.

In order to assess the effectiveness of these initiatives and to comply with the grant requirements for reporting, we will be asking participants who partake in any groups to participate in a completely confidential and anonymous survey that will measure changes in attitudes and behaviors in an effort to decrease the risk of substance misuse and abuse. The results of the survey will be used by the Department of Health and Human Services to evaluate the program's effectiveness. A copy of the survey is available at the high school for your review. A student may choose to opt out of the survey at any time; if you do not want your child to participate in the survey please email Mr. Stack ( [email protected] ) or Ms. Fuller ([email protected]).
