Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

December 2 Early Release Moved to November 30
A Message From Dr. Brian Blake, Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I am writing to let you know about a change in our school calendar coming up at the end of November. We have an early release day scheduled for Wednesday, December 2, 2015. We are moving the early release day to Monday November 30, 2015.

The reason for the change in the calendar is to accommodate the Lawrence W. O'Toole Award ceremony. Following the dismissal of students, the staff will be attending the awards ceremony at the Sanborn Regional High School. In addition to representatives from the Nellie Mae Foundation, numerous dignitaries including the Governor, Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Education, and local politicians will be attending. Due to space limitations, there will be limited seating available to the community. In light of that, we will be filming the event and posting it to our website for public viewing.

The Lawrence W. O'Toole Award of $100,000 will help us to continue our work in competency based education and personalized learning. We are exploring a variety of opportunities to enhance the educational opportunities that we provide here at Sanborn.

I thank you for your understanding and flexibility. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact my office.

Senior Spotlight : Logan Kalinowski
An Article by Principal Brian M. Stack With Contributions From Several Staff Members

Mr. Stack's Note: Each week I like to "spotlight" one senior student who makes contributions to our school community both in and out of the classroom. Students who will be spotlighted are interviewed in advance and staff members contribute to each article.

Logan's peers look up to him for a variety of reasons, and not just because of his height. Logan is a super star in the classroom, on the field and the basketball court, and in his job. He is a leader with strong moral values.

Logan's teachers describe him as dedicated, motivated, and one who always puts forth his best effort in class. Math teacher Kevin Conant had this to say about Logan: It has been my pleasure having Logan in my classroom the past four years. Logan not only understands how to be successful academically, he helps others find success too. Logan is a natural leader; whether in the classroom or on the playing field.

Seacoast School of Technology Pre-Engineering teacher Vaso Partinoudi added this about Logan and his experience in his two year career and technical program at SST:
Logan has consistently shown a high degree of motivation and commitment to his education. He  strives to go beyond the minimal requirements of all assignments. He has consistently shown a high level of self-organization and demonstrated his ability to manage his time despite the rigorous academic and extracurricular load which he has taken on. Logan devotes a significant amount of time during each class in helping students who have difficulty with the material presented. He always shows respect and is successful in his effort to help other students. He is well respected and appreciated by his peers and teachers. He volunteers in the Tech Fun Night where once a month he helps us introduce middle school students to engineering, graphic design and basic computer programming.

Logan is a four year member of the school's soccer and basketball teams, and he has been recognized by his teammates and his coaches this year by his election as captain for both teams. Basketball coach Joe Tardif talked about Logan as a student athlete, describing him in this way: Logan is the very definition of an excellent "student athlete". As a coach you wish you could have a whole team of students like Logan. You never have to worry about his grades or his actions off the court. Knowing that he will always make good decisions off the court allows us to focus more on basketball. Logan is a great team captain because he leads by example. He may not be the most vocal or "rah rah" kind of player, but he provides the team with a constant flow of positive leadership through his play and actions on and off the court. His skills on the court have come a long way since I first met him in the 7th grade. Starting off as a player who struggled to make a left handed layup, to now dunking the basketball in a variety of ways, Logan has become and excellent basketball player through hard work and dedication. Now he has the skills to lead the basketball team to a successful playoff run. Logan has set himself up to be a very successful young man and I am know he will be doing great things in the future.

After high school, Logan plans to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. The University of New Hampshire and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell are his top choices. Where life takes him, we have no doubt Logan will continue to shine in all that he does, and we wish him a great senior year!

I am College Bound Campaign
An Article by Guidance Counselor Laura Pouliot

This past Wednesday, Sanborn School Counselor Laura Pouliot volunteered to spend the day at Raymond High School participating in the "I Am College Bound/I Applied" campaign.  This is a national effort sponsored by the American Council on Education (ACE) to increase the number of first-generation and low-income students who pursue a post-secondary education.  The campaign's purpose is to help high school seniors navigate the college admissions process and ensure that each student pursues a post-secondary education by inviting them to submit at least one college admission application during a particular school day with the support of their school and local higher education professionals.

Mrs. Pouliot worked with other volunteers from Pembroke Academy, Great Bay Community College and NHTI to help 45 out of Raymond's 69 seniors to submit a total of 63 applications!  Statewide, the "I Am College Bound/I Applied" campaign exceeded its goals this past week by having 535 NH Seniors from 14 different public schools submit 999 applications!  This NH initiative is led by a Steering Committee with members from the NH Dept. of Ed., the NH College & University Council, the Univ. System of NH, the Community College System of NH, NHHEAF, the Campus Compact of NH, the NH Charitable Foundation, the NH School Counselors Association and NH Association of Student Aid Administrators.

SRHS Teacher Wins State Technology Award
Congratulations to Mr. Gray!

This past week, Sanborn Regional High School Social Studies teacher Brian Gray learned that he has been named the 2016 New Hampshire Society for Technology in Education (NHSTE) Pat Keyes Technology - Using Educator Award winner. This award is given annually to one New Hampshire educator who has developed effective units integrating educational technology, demonstrated improved student performance with application of technology, and shared ideas and initiatives in formal and informal arenas using traditional and electronic methods.

Principal Brian M. Stack recognized that Gray's background and use of technology is "second to none" at Sanborn. He described him as a "willing early adopter of new technology tools in the classroom who takes the time to test them, trouble shoot them, and then train other staff members to use them. The school's recent successes with a number of software and hardware technology tools can be attributed in some way to Brian Gray."

Librarian Pam Harland added, " In addition to integrating practical and cutting-edge technology into his Social Studies curriculum, Brian also co-teaches Modern Media where he integrates reading, writing, speaking, listening, world events, community activities, statistics, art, theatre, photography, media, and technology into the units. He works with Freshmen and upperclassmen all in one classroom, facilitating their learning while inspiring their independence."

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Brian J. Blake added that Mr. Gray has taken the use of technology in the classroom to a whole new level.  Constantly pushing the limits of the uses of technology, he has raised the bard for both staff and students alike.  I'm very proud to have Mr. Gray as a member of my team.
