Senior Spotlight : Haley Herrmann
An Article by Principal Brian M. Stack With Contributions From Several Staff Members

Mr. Stack's Note: Each week I like to "spotlight" one senior student who makes contributions to our school community both in and out of the classroom. Students who will be spotlighted are interviewed in advance and staff members contribute to each article.

One of our school's core values is risk-taking (it is the "R" in PRIDE). Risk-taking involving a student's willingness to step outside of their comfort zone in order to get ahead or learn something new. During her freshman year at Sanborn, This now Sanborn senior took one of the biggest risks of her life. She made the decision to get on a plane and travel to a foreign country to spend a year of her life abroad. For Haley, it was a game-changer in her life.

Haley was first inspired to study abroad after hearing about a similar experience her Spanish 1 teacher Ms. Miller had when she was younger. With just a year of Spanish under her belt and the support of her family, Haley applied for and was accepted into a competitive high school study abroad program. She spent a year living with a family in Spain, attending school and experiencing all life has to offer for a fifteen year old teenager. To this day, Haley believes it was one of the best things she could have done as it has made her a more ambitious, outgoing, and culturally diverse student at Sanborn.

Haley is a superstar both in and out of the classroom. Her teachers describe her as organized, dedicated, and always looking to do her best. Technology teacher Kate Krumm added this about Haley: Haley is one of those students that is just a joy to have in the classroom.  She is willing to go the extra mile for herself as well as help those around her that need it.  Haley has impressed me with her maturity and spunk!  She is a world traveler and always has her suitcase open and half packed just in case she has the opportunity to go somewhere.  She is like that with academics as well.  Haley is very thoughtful and deliberate in what she does and the houses she plans in CAD.  She puts such thought into how people, not just a teenager, would use the space.  She is just impressive!

Outside of the classroom, Haley is involved in a variety of school activities including soccer, winter and spring track, Key Club, Spanish National Honor Society, and National Honor Society. She also works part time at What's the Scoop?, a local ice cream stand.
After high school, Haley's dream is to study civil engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. She has aspirations to focus on international relations and/or environmental studies, and isn't ruling out the possibility of working with the Peace Corps. With her drive and determination, we know this Sanborn senior will continue to be in the spotlight in the future!

October Staff Members of the Month
Congratulations to Ken Jacobs and Rick Theriault!

Each month, Sanborn Regional High School recognizes two staff members for its Staff Member of the Month Award for their professionalism and commitment to the students of our school. Congratulations to the following two staff members for their efforts!

Rick Theriault

Known to students simply as "Rick," Rick Theriault serves as our school's safety officer. As a retired Lieutenant of the Kingston Police Department, Rick has a wealth of experience that he brings to the job each day. He helps our school community of roughly 1000 adults and students be safe. Rick can often be found in the halls, the parking lot, or around the campus of our school at all hours of the day. He also serves as a co-advisor for the school's Key Club. Additionally, Rick teaches Driver Education classes to our students after school. He has earned the admiration and respect of students and staff alike for his continued dedication to our school.

Ken Jacobs

Ken Jacobs is a Chemistry and Astronomy teacher at our school. He is also a teacher team leader. Mr. Jacobs always goes the extra mile to make sure he is incorporating cutting edge advanced science in his classes. Over the last couple of years he has established a great working partnership for our school with MIT's Haystack Observatory in Westford MA. He has recently revamped his entire AP Chemistry program. Last week he hosted a Sunday night lunar eclipse viewing party at the school for his students and their families. He has also taken the lead on our school's efforts to develop PACE assessments for science. Mr. Jacob's enthusiasm and love for science is apparent in all that he does, and we are lucky to have him on our staff to share his skills with our students.

Leadership in the Sophomore Experience
An Article by English Teacher Aaron Cass

Our sophomores arrive to us full of grit, excited to finally not to be the youngest kids in the school. As teachers on the Sophomore Experience team, we use the 10th grade year to equip students with the skills they'll need to go on and lead the school when they become upperclassmen.

To get the ball rolling, we started this year with a weeklong series of advisory activities in which kids untied knots, tiptoed over ice, navigated rocky waters and faced off against invisible mazes.   Lots of fun, but imbedded in each of these activities were opportunities for students to identify, develop and reflect on what it means to be leaders and how to work together as a team.

On the last day, students debriefed on what they learned. Having read about the 15 traits of successful leaders , students took time to point out positive qualities they observed in their peers. One student said, "I saw Marissa helping the group to stay focused." Another noted, "Lizzie did a great job planning where everyone goes on the iceberg to help us survive. She tackled problems and came up with solutions."

Using this week of activities as our foundation we will continue to revisit this theme throughout the year, encouraging students to practice and demonstrate their leadership skills in the classroom. From there, we leave it up to them to boldly lead Sanborn into the future.

Student Named National Merit Commended Student
Congratulations to Nicholas Porter!

The principal, Brian M. Stack, of Sanborn Regional High School announced today that Nicholas P. Porter has been named a Commended Student in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to this scholastically talented senior at the school's Academic Awards Evening on Tuesday, September 22, 2015.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. "The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. Help Sanborn End 68 Hours of Hunger
Make a Donation Today!

How you can help End 68 Hours of Hunger

Depending on the extent to which you want to become involved with the program, your participation can vary from a one- time contribution to monthly or even weekly participation.

Here is a list of the kinds of support that you can provide depending on your desired level of participation.

One event contributions:

You can send a single donation to P.O Box 240, Newton, NH 03858.

You can go shopping and purchase non-perishable food products (with expiration dates as far as possible into the future) and deliver them to us (requires prior arrangement so call us at (603)560-0151 or (978)210-1335 for a list of products and delivery arrangements).

You can host a fund raiser to earn money for the program. We can help provide you with letter head, forms and if possible have someone there. We are gearing up for food drives this spring and summer and we need tons of volunteers for that to run smoothly!

Multiple event contributions

You can send us a check every month or as often as you wish to support our efforts.

You can set up a team to be responsible for one week each month. Packers go to the high school to our storage room, pack bags, and sometimes deliver them back to the schools filled.

You can help unload, sort, and store groceries after each delivery/purchase.

We currently need, canned pasta with meat, tuna, mayo, cereal bars/granola bars, crackers, cereal, canned fruit, jelly, and snacks or fun single serve items.

Perhaps you have your own ideas! We are open to suggestions! Call or write now!

Food donations can be dropped off at any of the Sanborn Schools in Newton and Kingston, the Nichols Library in Kingston, the Gale library in Newton and at Wicks and Whimsies 14 Main St, East Kingston, NH 03827.
