Poll results: LGBTQ Acceptance Loses Ground
This year’s (GLAAD/Harris Poll) survey reflects a decline with people’s comfort year-over-year in every LGBTQ situation, losing ground that had been gained during the last four years. Three of the most personal interaction scenarios experienced significant declines with more people reporting discomfort with “learning a family member is LGBTQ”, “learning my child’s teacher is LGBTQ” and “learning my doctor is LGBTQ”.

LGBT Older Adult Dementia
Varied forms of dementia and other cognitive impairments include unique concerns for those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT). These concerns center around social isolation, discrimination, barriers to health care access, limited availability of and support for caregivers, and higher rates of certain chronic illnesses. The increasing size of this older adult population further escalates the need to find more researched based solutions to these problems..

LGBT Retirement Readiness
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) workers in the United States are outperforming LGBT workers in eight other countries with regard to their retirement readiness, according to a first-of-its-kind study. “LGBT: Retirement Preparations Amid Social Progress” surveyed 900 LGBT workers and retirees in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. to provide a detailed analysis of the retirement readiness of the LGBT community. (Ted Godbout, National Association of Plan Advisors, 1/31/18)

Aging with HIV/AIDS
As a doctor, I’m well aware that the estimated life expectancy of people who are first diagnosed with HIV at age 30 is now 75 years old — a huge leap from the 1980s, when those with the virus were given as little as a few weeks to a few years to live. Fortunately, a lot of people outlived those dire projections, and many of them are now long-term survivors who continue to thrive as they age. (Dr. Frank Spinelli, Plus, 2/12/18)

Polari: The code language gay men used to survive
Polari was spoken to skirt the UK’s strict anti-homosexuality laws. Though largely forgotten, some of its words can be found in dictionaries today. Watch a BBC video about Polari.
