KEEP AN EYE ON PLANS TO BOOST FUNDING FOR CTE SCHOOLS

School leaders are keeping tabs on a New Jersey bill that could infuse Career and Technical Education (CTE) schools with $500 million for upgrades and expansions.

ALUMNI OF ADULT ED'S PHLEBOTOMY PROGRAM FIND SUCCESS AFTER '100 STICKS'

Adult Education's phlebotomy instructor John Dispensa has gone from teacher to colleague for many of the program's students. In just his three short years of teaching, Dispensa, who works as a phlebotomist with Hunterdon Healthcare, has seen many of his students secure employment with the healthcare system. Some join per diem, others part-time or full-time. The program's alumni say that flexibility is part of the draw of becoming a phlebotomist.

Commercial arts and advertising design senior Erin Shaw impressed not one, but two scholarship committees with her impressive resume of community service and her sincere commitment to making service a priority in her life. Erin has even used the design skills she has honed at Polytech to help others. As part of her Girl Scouts' Silver Award project, she worked with another Girl Scout to hand make more than 200 art and activity booklets for young patients at the Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Any Emergency Medical Technician will attest that the job is not for the faint of heart. EMTs need to be able to maintain focus, often during unsettling and unpredictable situations. They must remain calm and thoughtful throughout. The only way to know if you are cut out for such a work environment is through on-the-job training.

POLYTECH TEAM PLACES SECOND AT HIGHLY COMPETITIVE RUTGERS VETERINARY SCIENCE EVENT

The team of Eve Cronin, Shay Fleming, Samantha Gervasi, and Molly Shanahan, students in Polytech's Animal Science Program, came in second place at an April FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event (CDE) at Rutgers University. The event brought together 15 teams, representing FFA chapters located throughout the state of New Jersey, to complete a series of tests designed to gauge their technical knowledge and practical skills in the field of veterinary science.

'Let's Sit Together' Project Begins to Take Shape

Polytech students are putting the finishing touches on 40 Adirondack chairs they're building in a community art and creative place-making project that will result in colorful "conversation areas" in Flemington this summer.

SENIORS FOCUS ON THEIR FUTURES, WHILE STATS SHOW THEY'RE ALREADY SUCCESSFUL

Soon-to-be graduates of Polytech High School focused on their futures by wearing shirts that announced their plans for school, work, or military service. But the statistics gathered for a state report show they are already successful: More than 80 percent have solid plans for continuing their education, and together they have been awarded $2.2 million in scholarships.

Impressed with the design work coming out of Kutztown University, Polytech instructor Cynthia Dailey recently took her graphic design students to visit the university. The students, mostly juniors, got to experience 'a day in the life' of Kutztown design students.

POLYTECH'S NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY HOSTS 'COLORING IN HOPE'

National Art Honor Society students know that to support the mental health and wellness of their peers, they first have to break the stigmas associated with mental illness and addiction. They did just that by hosting the inaugural Coloring in Hope event.

POLYTECH STUDENTS STAY COOL UNDER PRESSURE AT COOKOFF COMPETITION

Polytech's culinary and baking arts team remained as cool as 007 himself in their James Bond Casino Royale-themed presentation at the New Jersey Association of Counties (NJAC) Conference. Six students tackled an ambitious "Smoking Gun Risotto," which went along with their theme.

NEW HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATORS PROGRAM GETS FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM THE STATE

A promising new program at Polytech High School has the financial support of the state of New Jersey. The Department of Education included the Heavy Equipment Operators Program (HEOP) among recipients of grant funding designed to help vocational-technical school districts that partner with business and industry.

NEWLY HIRED COMPUTER SCIENCE TEACHER JUMPS IN WITH FREE CODING WORKSHOP

The newly hired teacher for HCVSD's shared-time Computer Science program will lead a free "Introduction to Coding" workshop in conjunction with HackHunterdon. The one-hour workshop is designed for adults who are curious about computer coding, but have little or no experience.
