Hours:
Second Saturdays of the month 3-10pm

This month, the Pomona Art Colony breathes a sigh of relief – like the rest of the country – that one of the most frustrating and loathsome election years is finally over, and that they’ll have at least six months downtime before being bombarded with propaganda for the 2016 race.

With matters of state now decided upon, it’s time to turn back to what we can actually hold on to and believe in – ART!  Kicking things off, Loft on 2nd focuses on a subject on everyone’s mind these days: “Life & Death in America.” Curated by Rachel Wright and LA RAW Rawwater, this photographic exhibit features diverse narratives by LA artists who’ve joined forces under the helm of Cal Poly Alums Efehi Ogbebor and Kaymar Hale to express their gritty and glam takes on the craziest nation in the world. Check it out to see if you’ve been included! www.LOFTon2nd.com

Over at the new SPACE Gallery, curator Christina Long continues her “Iconic Punk Rock Photography” show by Roberta Bayley that shines a veritable police search light into the dark crevices of lower Manhattan and the Village to unearth pioneers Debbie Harry, Holly Vincent, Richard Hell, Iggy Pop, Joey Ramone and other rockers who’d smash your face in at CBGB – if you’re lucky! www.facebook.com/spacegallerypomona

Grungy meets gold over at the dba256 Wine Bar with “Golden Apple,” a group show featuring work by Logan Duarte, Danielle Gibson, Denise Eve, Jared Henderson, John Le, Alex LeGolvan, Adriano Martinez, Douglas McCurdy, Romana Menegoni and Joshua Miller. They’re also prepping you the night before with live riffs from Blackfeet Braves, Douglas and the Furs, and the Pool Honeys. www.dba256.com

Once you’ve banged your head a bit, check out the Loft Beats Friday Night Sessions at the Fox Theatre where you’ll find work by Alisa King, Joe Ded, Deity and Art Montoya, with a backdrop of tunes spun by Rufnek Entertainment – and be sure to stick around for the midnight performance of 2mex of the Visionaries. Next door at The Drink, you’ll find the enveloping cultural themes of Gil Arreola, and the following evening, an entire gaggle of resident artists will display at the Urban Coral Gallery. www.loftbeats.com

Continue your stroll around the Second Street block and stop off at the SCA Project Gallery for their annual member show, the Bunny Gunner Gallery for some impressive work by Athena Hahn and Michael Woodcock,  and Ink’d Chronicles for some awesomely vintage WWII pin-up art by Sant. www.scagallery.com www.bunnygunner.com www.inkdchronicles.com

Things get earthy once you arrive at EVE Gallery for Alejandro Navia’s debut solo show, “Caminando Arias (Walking Barefoot),” in which the subliminal realist artist from South Central paints what we’ve either forgotten or that we take for granted, from wise tales recounted by elders to secrets whispered by children.  The Metro Gallery also joins in on the cultural remembrances with Cynthia Dunlap’s “Global Images,” a selection of paintings and sculpture of people and animals from around the world. www.facebook.com/pages/The-EVE-Gallery  www.downtownpomona.org

There’s certainly one nature image known the world round, and that’s the rose. Originating mainly in Asia but found on at least four continents, the rose has over 100 species and at least as many different meanings and symbols attached. Find out what some of them are at the Main Street Gallery’s “The Rose Show,” an invitational exhibition featuring over 80 works by 33 artists, including Michael Aschenbrenner, Pascual Arriaga, Celeste Blair, William Catling, Dee Marcellus-Cole, Sumi Foley, Jim Fonseca, Phillip Graffman, Yi Kai, Karen S. Kauffman, Denise Kramer, Joy McAlister, Fr. Bill Moore, Cindy Moore, Shirley McWorter-Moss, Phillip Nunez, Dan Romero, Sharon Suhovy, Joseph Todorovitch and others. mainstreetgallery

Last but definitely not least, come on down early on Saturday to marvel at the wealth of street art at the Colony’s annual Chalk Walk!  Teenagers, Co-Ed, adults and kids join forces to fancy up the Pomona sidewalks with original creations and expressive imaginative excursions. Remember that you can join in, too, so bring your chalk, grab a slab and start sketching – you may even win a prize! www.ci.pomona.ca.us

Please enjoy the continuing shows at these other fine galleries: AC Projects; dA Center for the Arts.
