Grand opening of Union Berkley Riverfront
The ribbon cutting ceremony at the grand opening of
Union Berkley Riverfront.
Flaherty & Collins Properties and Port KC celebrated the grand opening of Union Berkley Riverfront, a $72 million, mixed-use development on Wednesday, June 13, at 1000 Berkley Parkway in Kansas City.
"We are excited to open this property for the Berkley Riverfront and Downtown Kansas City," said Ryan Cronk, Vice President of Development for Flaherty & Collins Properties. "Port KC has done a fabulous job in preparing this area for the growth it is seeing now, and we believe this project, with quality housing that supports the Riverfront area, is another component that will continue to build on the thriving downtown of Kansas City."

Union is a mixed-use development consisting of 407 market rate luxury apartments and 12,400 square feet of retail space. A secure parking garage featuring 443 parking spaces, to be used by residents and retail customers, will be housed on property.
"The new Union Berkley Riverfront development is exactly what Kansas City needs to help welcome new residents, visitors and tourists to our beautiful riverfront," said Mayor of Kansas City, Sly James. "This exciting new community will be an asset to downtown Kansas City, and an anchor for future projects."

Union will offer residents and guests gorgeous, panoramic views of downtown and direct access to the riverfront park area. These amenities will support and activate the Berkley Riverfront greenspace next to the Missouri River and meets the goals that Port KC had in mind when they identified the project.

"The opening of Union Berkley Riverfront marks a significant point in our city's history as we bring people back to its origins - our beautiful riverfront," said Zoraya Rowlands, Interim President & CEO of Port KC. "We couldn't have asked for a better partner in Flaherty & Collins for this first development project at the riverfront. Union reflects their commitment to bring world class, luxury living to Kansas City's front door."
The project, at 664,812 total square feet, began construction in late November 2016, is developed and managed by Flaherty & Collins Properties, financed by TCF Bank and was constructed by MW Builders. Learn more by visiting www.unionbp.com .

Tonnage continues to grow on the Missouri River in KC region

Port KC saw its first shipments of coal slag in
May and June of this year.
Port KC has seen a 106% increase in tonnage since it reopened the port in 2015. For this year, the projected annual tonnage of 73,414 tons adds to the existing 40,000 tons the terminal already handles. Such a large annual increase cannot be expected moving forward, but a modest 10 - 12% growth in annual tonnages is anticipated.

Most importantly, the terminals in the region have increased tons shipped, from 61,000 to a projected 428,000 for this year. Ports in the Kansas City region are Omaha, Nebraska City, Kansas City and Lexington, MO. Cement, grain and asphalt all play a part in the regional tonnage picture.
Tons shipped in the region have increased since 2015, with 428,000 tons projected to ship this year.
The shift from road and rail transport to water stems from a booming economy and tight freight capacity in the terrestrial modes. These waterborne shipping increases relate to removing 18,000 trucks from highways for long haul truck trips. As more barges appear on the river, freight rates will lower on the waterway as well as truck and rail.  This makes Kansas City and the surrounding region more competitive for freight transport and destination.
