Re:Port of LA Truck Drivers Strike over Labor Practices

Truck drivers from Green Fleet Systems, American Logistics International and Pac 9 Transportation walked off the job this morning at 5 AM to protest labor practices. Truck drivers announced that the strike would go on for 36 hours. Picket lines were set up at all three companies, all of which are based in Carson, CA. The strike is not expected to extend beyond the 36 hours. Picketers were also expected at company warehouses, rail yards and distribution centers this morning.

Truck drivers from Green Fleet Systems and American Logistics International stated that they have been harassed and intimidated for their efforts to organize a union with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Alex Cherin, a spokesman for both companies, criticized the strikes and said the majority of employees and drivers at Green Fleet do not want a union, given the competitive wages and benefits the company already offers.

This is the second strike in less than three months for truck drivers from Green Fleet Systems. They went on a 24-hour strike in late August, alleging unfair labor practices.

Truck drivers with Pac 9 Transportation argued that they have been wrongly classified as independent contractors instead of being listed as full-time employees. They have also alleged Pac 9 of wage theft.

The truck drivers from all three companies have planned a news conference at 4:00 PM PST today.
