FIRST SOLO EXHIBITION IN 25 YEARS BY AWARD-WINNING

PHOTOJOURNALIST AND AUTHOR OF ACCLAIMED BOOK PHOTOJOURNALISTS ON WAR: THE UNTOLD STORIES FROM IRAQ

ON VIEW AT BRONX ART SPACE FROM AUGUST 14 TO AUGUST 30, 2013

Portraits of Survival, intimate photographs from conflict zones around the world, is the first solo show of Michael Kamber's work in 25 years. Kamber, a former combat photographer with The New York Times, covered over a dozen conflicts in the past decade. The show will open on Wednesday, August 14 at 6pm with a reception for

Michael Kamber during which signed copies of Photojournalists On War: The Untold Stories from Iraq will be available.

In the quiet moments, when major combat had ended or in the lull between battles, Kamber took out his Hasselblad 120mm camera and captured remarkably poignant portraits of the civilians whose lives have been affected by these wars. The photographs were made in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Iraq, among other war torn countries.

Thirty portraits will be on display at Bronx Art Space from Wednesday, August 14th until Friday, August 30th.  Kamber, a longtime Bronx resident, is also showing his landscapes that he made in the South Bronx in the 1980s. Most of the photographs in these two bodies of work have never been seen or exhibited before.

Michael Kamber (www.kamberphoto.com) is the author of the critically acclaimed book Photojournalists on War: The Untold Stories from Iraq (University of Texas Press, 2013). He was the Times' principal photographer in Baghdad in 2007, the bloodiest year of the war. Other conflicts he has covered for the Times include Somalia, Afghanistan, the Congo, and Liberia. Kamber is an adjunct professor at Columbia University, and has taught at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, and the International Center of Photography. He is the founder of the Bronx Documentary Center (www.bronxdoc.org) and is the recipient of a World Press Photo and many other awards. To preview Photojournalists on War go here:
