HawkWatch Eagle Migration Event
November 18th
Join us on Saturday, November 18th at 1:00 p.m. for Hitchcock Nature Center's annual Eagle Migration Event to celebrate eagles and other migrating raptors and the important work done each season by the Hitchcock HawkWatch staff and volunteers.
 
Hitchcock Nature Center has been recognized as one of the top 5 hawkwatches in North America for viewing bald eagles and is one of the top 25 sites for viewing migrating raptors of all kinds. 

This annual program includes live raptor demonstrations, a guided birding hike, & other fun filled activities. Participants will be divided into groups and will rotate through a series of stations to experience a variety of activities throughout the afternoon. The Loess Hills Lodge gift shop and exhibit gallery will be open throughout this event as will the deck and the observation tower so make sure and allow extra time to take in the sights. Please plan on arriving early and meet at the Loess Hills Lodge welcome desk to check in.

Attendees will need to purchase a $2.00 per vehicle daily entrance pass or have a valid Pottawattamie County Parks annual permit to attend this event. Daily entrance passes may be purchased with exact change or check at the front gate and may be purchased the day of the event. Annual permits may be purchased for $10.00 from staff at any of our parks or at the Loess Hills Lodge at Hitchcock Nature Center during regular business hours. There is no additional fee to attend this event thanks to the generous support of the Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation. Free will donations are encouraged and will support continued programming opportunities in Pottawattamie County. 

Registration Now Open for Nature On Tap, December 16th at Hitchcock Nature Center
Join us at Hitchcock Nature Center for Nature on Tap, a 21 & over event on Saturday, December 16th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Register your team of up to 5 participants to try your hand at nature trivia and bring your thinking caps because there will be prizes up for grabs!

Tastings & refreshments will also be offered during this 21 & over event. Please note, participants must be age 21 & over to attend. Participants under 21 will not be admitted.

Teams may consist of 2 to 5 people for a maximum of 12 teams. We reserve the right to combine smaller teams to maximize participation at this event. December Trail Closure at Hitchcock Nature Center

All trails & backcountry campsites at Hitchcock Nature Center will be closed to hikers & park visitors December 2nd through 6th during shotgun season.

During this time only pre-registered hunters will be permitted access to the trails network and we ask that all park visitors abide by this restriction for their safety.

The Loess Hills Lodge exhibit gallery, observation tower & deck, playground, & campground will all be open regular business hours during this time.

Narrows River Park Closed for the Season

Narrows River Park in Council Bluffs has closed for the winter season. The park will remain closed throughout the winter with a planned season opening date of April 1st, 2018.

These dates are subject to change and are weather dependent. If Mother Nature has other plans we will post that information as soon as it is available to our Facebook page.

Loess Hills Lodge at Hitchcock Nature Center Holiday Closures and Winter Hours

Winter weather brings some changes to our hours of operation at Hitchcock Nature Center. While the park remains open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. throughout the season we will be reducing the hours of operation at the Loess Hills Lodge from December 4th, 2017 through March 5th, 2018. This annual change is due to the reduction in visitors to the park during the weekday hours.  

The Loess Hills Lodge will be open the following days and times from December 4th through March 5th.

Friday & Saturday - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 
Sunday - 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Closed Monday through Thursday
 
The holiday season also adds additional closures to the Loess Hills Lodge calendar. The Loess Hills Lodge will be observing the following closures during the months of November & December. 

Friday, November 10th in observance of the Veteran's Day holiday. We will re-open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 11th.

Thursday, November 23rd & Friday, November 24th in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will re-open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 25th. 

Sunday, December 24th in observance of the Christmas holiday. We will re-open at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, December 29th.
