The Life We Are Called To Live by Stephen W. Smith
|
Summer is here and with it an important anniversary. One year ago, Gwen and I stepped out of our comfort zone to begin what we called, "The Great Experiment." It would come to mean a lot for us. We'd move out of our family home where we had memories crated like boxes for each of our four sons and our marriage. We'd seek to simplify our lives by moving from a 3,500 square foot house to a log cabin with 800 square feet. We'd leave our established church and start over. Read More... |
Summer Doesn't have to Mean a Spiritual Slump
Summer ushers in a full time posture for ministry. We enjoyed our first wedding at the retreat with 85 guests in attendance and perfect weather. We've also been doing many soul care intensives--which are private retreats for couples in ministry and the marketplace. In addition, it's "high" season for vacation stays in our log cabins as well as the the Lodge.
As a growing staff, we've spent some time planning our new one day retreats for the fall and winter. We're providing a link here for you to see. Would you please FORWARD this to several of your friends and ask them to consider attending one of the upcoming retreats. If you'll help spread the word about what Potter's Inn is doing we'd be most grateful.
One of the mission goals of Potter's Inn is to be a RESOURCE to churches and organizations. Dictionary.com defines a resource as: a source of supply, support, or aid, especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed. This is a big mission for us to fulfill but that's exactly what we want to do. We want to be a source of supply for churches and organizations. By aiding churches in their mission, Potter's Inn can offer specialized and focused retreats that help the spiritual growth of men and women. We hope you'll consider coming to several. But most of all, we need your help in spreading the word that Potter's Inn is a resource - an aid that can be drawn upon in a time of need. Jesus felt it necessary to periodically withdraw and retreat. He did this both alone and in small groups. So, if Jesus did it, we have a model to know better how to live our lives. Why not read through our offerings, and choose one or two and register soon!

Our New Prayer Labyrinth
Gwen and I were introduced to prayer using a Labyrinth at two dangerous intersection of our lives. The first was when one of our Army sons was deployed and in harms way. We used a labyrinth to help us focus and move from numb and scared to faith and meaning. Walking around the labyrinth gave us the opportunity to put our bodies into the posture of prayer. To be honest, prayer for so many of us can be so huge and so consuming that we really freeze. By walking the labyrinth, we thawed our hearts and minds and found space to find the words to tell God exactly how we felt. Another time we used the labyrinth was when one of our sons was at the door of death and hospitalized for 32 days in intensive care. Again, there were few words. The hospital, thankfully had a labyinrh embedded in the tile of the chapel. We'd go there before, after and during his multiple surgeries. Again, walking slowly and moving to the center of the circle, which symbolized God. We were deeply ministered to.
Our retreat now has a beautiful labyrinth located by the Companion Bench on the Prayer Trail. You can walk it alone or bring a friend. There are three massive tree trunks in the center of the labyrinth symbolizing the Trinity. The idea is to move towards God - not away from him despite whatever season of life that you find yourself in right now. Please call our office (719-264-8837) and reserve a time so you can pray alone.

Meditation Garden
Our new Meditation Garden is now complete! We've erected the 8 foot water wheel which draws fresh spring water from the ground. It flows over Colorado moss stone to a receiving pond. We've planted Colorado Blue Spruce, Quaking Aspens and a Burning Bush shrub to make a beautiful and natural place to sit, reflect and pray. It's a large venue that could accommodate special events such as weddings and other services. We've now ordered four massive log benches which will be placed for you to sit and relax.
