Welcome to the July newsletter.  We had some great feedback from our last issue on Power Quality and Lighting discussing EN61000-3-2 standards.  We had so much pertinent information to cover we felt it was necessary to create a second paper focusing on controlling harmonic emissions.  This paper covers:

  • Requirements for Energy Star and ANSI C82.77-2002
  • Advantages and Disadvantages of Passive and Active Power Factor Correction (PFC)
  • Key Reasons Reduction of Harmonic Current is Essential
  • High Cost of Low Power Factor
  • Methods of Reducing Harmonic Emissions in Lighting
  • Case Study of Constant Current LED Driver
Power Quality and Lighting (Part II) EN 61000-3-2;  Controlling Harmonic Emissions in Lighting Applications

This article will continue the discussion of power quality in lighting and look at some of the ways to control harmonic content. There are several standards in use and the categorization of emissions limits varies from one standard to the next, though they have much in common. Compliancy is based on the standard referenced for each.  EN61000-3-2 Class C is the standard which considers only the harmonic emissions themselves as shown below.

Other regulations include Energy Star standards for luminaries as well as the ANSI (American National Standards institute) C82.77-2002.   Read Full Article....
