June 2012
Greetings!

Holy bananas!  Where has June gone?  Summer festivities are here which means GO-GO-GO!  With all the different events and people we may come across, I decided to dedicate June's newsletter to POSITIVITY!  After all, health is about more than just what we eat and how much we're exercising.  Our thoughts - and those of others - are powerful, and play a huge role in our overall health and well-being.  You are in charge of what you allow in so I encourage you all to choose those thoughts wisely.

WE ARE WHAT WE THINK

"Our happiness depends on the habit of mind we cultivate.  So practice happy thinking every day.  Cultivate the merry heart, develop the happiness habit, and life will become a continual feast."

- Norman Vincent Peale

It's time to take responsibility for what you hold in your mind. You are the keeper of your thoughts.  Having a positive attitude and seeing the glass half full can become a habit - and a good one at that! They say that it takes 21-days for a behavior to become a habit, hence why most detox/cleanses recommend a 21-day commitment to make life changes permanent.  That's less than a month out of your life!

It's easy to look at circumstances as those which are happening to you instead of those which are happening just as they should at this very moment.  We may not always understand the why's, but we can choose to believe that no matter what, this discomfort and maybe even struggle, is temporary and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.  You have the choice to reject what you fear may happen, and immediately replace it with an affirmation of what you want to happen.  By visualizing the outcome as a positive one, you can shift your attitude to a happier, healthier place.

I encourage you to make a promise to yourself - for yourself - to commit to 21-days of shifting any negative thinking into positive thoughts and actions - I have no doubt that your happiness will radiate thru you  and that your stress will decrease tremendously.  Whatever obstacles you may be facing - whether personal, spiritual, financially or other - you have the power to change how you think about it.  What do you have to lose?

GET ON THE HAPPY TRAIN - choo choo!
Here are a few suggestions to get you started on a POSITIVE PATH:
  1. Write 'em down.  Make a list of 5 to 7 affirmations and put them somewhere that is visible every day.  This could be a mirror, fridge, desk, even your front door.
  2. Use present tense.  Phrase affirmations as though they already exist (for example: "I am happy" instead of "I will be happy.")
  3. Always stay positive. Compliment yourself.  Self affirming statements make a huge impact on self esteem.  You are worth all the happiness in the world.  Go get it!
  4. Make 'em short and simple.  This should be a positive experience, not 'work'.
  5. Be realistic.  Don't tell yourself "I love my job" if it's not true. Say, "I am working my way towards_______."  And then do it.
  6. Look in the mirror while repeating affirmations. Get in your own face.
  7. Avoid negative people.  Surround yourself with people who are uplifting, encouraging, and feed you emotionally.  And be sure you're the same for them.  We all have bad days but would you rather hang out with Negative Nancy or Positive Polly?
  8. Pay it forward.  When you're feeling down, try lending a hand or complimenting someone else.  This does wonders for the doer - which would be you :)
  9. Get movin'.  Exercise stimulates endorphins, the happy hormones in the body.  Not only is it good for you physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.  If you're new to exercise, start slow.  Try walking or yoga and find what works for you.  Finding a buddy to work-out with can be a lot of fun, not to mention motivating.  Just be sure he/she has the same determination & goals as you do.
  10. SMILE!

"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."

- Randy Pausch

You all deserve to live your very best life.  And while I understand that things are not always perfect, you do have a choice as to the thoughts that you allow to enter your mind.  No matter what life may throw at you, try to remember that you are worth happiness, joy, love, fulfillment and peace.  And you can absolutely have it all!  As my wise & adorable Nana always says: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!"  And make sure it's a darn good glass (or pitcher)!
