Volumes 1, 2, and 3.

We are in the midst of preparing the special limited edition reprint of Ray Harryhausen - Master of the Majicks as a 3-volume Box Set complete with custom slipcase. Each volume of this limited edition reprint is being revised and updated, and each volume is also being offered individually.

THE REPRINT EDITION
Several Options Are Available:

UPDATE & NEW FEATURES

A few months back we concluded a successful funding campaign on FundAnything. Since then we've been working steadily towards updating all 3 volumes with new photos and text, as well as making corrections to information and content, all the way down to fixing those pesky little typos. Each volume is shaping up to becoming even better than the original editions.

Revised Layouts!
In addition to corrections and added material, we're taking advantage of this opportunity to improve the design and layout of the books, bringing a fresh look to many of the original pages:

Original page on the left, enhanced design on the right.

Improved image quality (photo of Joan Taylor) plus added photos.

New Photos!
Over 600 added images spanning all three volumes, supplementing the 6,100+ photos and artwork in the original volumes.

New shots of Ray and his models.

Additions to The Animal World chapter in Volume 2.

New on-set photos taken during the production of One Million Years, B.C. in Volume 3.
Ray's models on display in Germany.
Expanded coverage of the work of sculptor Arthur Hayward from the collection of Mark Wolf.
Additional posters, such as the 2 foreign posters above from The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.

Willis O'Brien's storyboards for his original version of Gwangi.

Upgraded Photos!
Many photos have been upgraded using newly-discovered prints and negatives:

An expanded behind-the-scenes view of the stage where King Kong would be put on display.

New Information
Significant finds in archives provide new insights into the production of Ray Harryhausen's films. Below, a sample of the actual animation log sheets from Mighty Joe Young detailing who animated what shot on a particular date:

Using this information, we are preparing a gallery of each shot from the "Piano Sequence" from Mighty Joe Young with notations of dates and animators.

Similar documentation is providing us with the most comprehensive list of production credits ever for King Kong as a supplement to our chapter on Ray's mentor, Willis O'Brien, including stunt personnel and Extras (by name) in the Skull Island and New York sections. For example:

Now identified: little Irene Henry cowers from the mighty Kong in a shot filmed on November 29, 1932 (eighty-two years ago this month).

Bookplate
Each Box Set or individual volume purchased separately will include a full color Bookplate personally signed by author Mike Hankin (signature simulated in the image below):

  • A selection of actual script pages from Mysterious Island describing the never-filmed sequences that would have featured actor Nigel Green battling the man-eating plant and the marriage of Herbert and Elena;
  • David Schecter's detailed essays on the music in Mighty Joe Young, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, It Came From Beneath the Sea, The Animal World, and 20 Million Miles to Earth, reprinted with permission from the original texts accompanying the CD releases from Monstrous Movie Music. This material includes extensive information about the use of stock library music (and its use in other films) and biographies and photos of some of the composers;

These books are an absolute must-have for any Ray Harryhausen fan. Believe me, you will not be disappointed even if you've read everything else out there.
- Sam Calvin

These three volumes all together are the greatest books on fantasy films- ever.
