Time for a Holiday Wellness Check

Seniors living independently may not be safe on their own. This holiday season, if you are visiting an elderly loved one living alone and are concerned for their well-being, follow these steps to perform a quick wellness check:

Give them a hug . With a full embrace around their back share your love, but also feel for frail frames or prominent bones indicating a decline in weight. Clothes can hide a lot. Improper nutrition or a medical condition can contribute to weight loss.

Check the refrigerator . Take a glance inside the refrigerator for expired food, lack of fresh vegetables or even something that's not supposed to be in there (television remote control?). Lack of nutrition or dehydration can affect health.

Review the mail . When checking on aging parent, glance through the recent mail to ensure that bills are being paid in a timely manner. Also, look for scams that target seniors.
If you are worried about the well-being of an elderly loved one, we can help.

Contact ActivCare at Bressi Ranch at 800-425-2091 for free resources. We can even schedule our Care Manager to visit your loved one and provide a free wellness assessment.

GNP Joan's Holiday Safety Tips

As you prepare for the holidays, ActivCare's own Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Joan Tincher has a few tips for you to stay safe.

Do Not Put Up Your Own Christmas Lights  - Whether on the house or on the tree, holiday lights and decorations make the season bright. However, it is not safe for aging adults to climb ladders or extend to reaching heights.

Keep Hydrated - As temperatures dip, it can be easy to forget to drink water. Be sure to intake plenty of fluids throughout the day. Remember that caffeinated beverages can deplete the body's fluids, so integrate refreshing water into your routine.

Take Your Best Shot at Prevention - Consult with your physician and get a flu shot. Be sure to get a pneumonia vaccination at your next doctor's visit. These preventive measures can help keep you healthy during the winter months.

Avoid Flammable Decor  - Artificial trees provide the beauty of a natural Christmas tree without the upkeep or mess. Even consider downsizing to a smaller tree and decorate together to avoid trying to do too much.To prevent a potential fire, consider battery operated candle decorations instead.

Fall-Proof Your Home - 60% of falls happen inside the home. Remove obstacles and trip hazards to improve your safety. Here's a helpful article to assist with fall-proofing.

3 Ways to Improve a Holiday Visit with a Loved One at a Senior Community

A holiday is still a holiday whether it is celebrated at home or at an Assisted Living community. Here are some ways to celebrate together:
  • Consider joining your loved one in community-planned holiday activities. (Check your community's schedule for upcoming events.)
  • Bring a favorite holiday food to share.
  • Sing holiday carols and ask if other residents would like to join in.
Now That is Punny!

Do you still rock out to eight-track tapes? Then you'll dig these band names for aging musicians:
* Counting Crows Feet
* R.E.Member?
* Nine Inch Toenails
* Hair Supply
* Minivan Morrison
* The Early Byrds
* WalkDMC
"The first sign of maturity is the discovery that the volume knob also turns to the left."
( ~Jerry M. Wright)
There was a man who entered a pun contest. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.
Where are average things manufactured? The satisfactory.
The past, present, and future walk into a bar. It was tense.
What do you call a fish with no eye? Fsh.
