Pre-Paying Your Property Tax
Holiday Hours and Services
Meet an d Treat Tonight!
Dear Neighbor,

Though we don't know all the final details, it appears that in 2018, deductions for state and local income taxes, plus real estate taxes for non-business real estate, will be capped at $10,000.  If your annual combined state tax and property taxes exceed $10,000, you might consider prepaying part of your property taxes before the end of this year to get a deduction on your 2017 tax returns.   Here's a helpful article from the  New York Times .

How to prepay:
  • Online - Go to cookcountytreasurer.com and select "Prepay Your 2017 Taxes." You can use your bank account or credit card to pay.
  • Download your bill - You can print a copy of your prepayment bill by choosing "Download Your Bill" on the homepage and entering your PIN or property address.  Send the prepayment bill and your payment to:

Cook County Treasurer

PO Box 805436

Chicago, IL 60680-4115

  • In person - Submit the prepayment bill and payment at a Chase branch bank or the Treasurer's Office, 118 N. Clark St., Room 112, Chicago
While the entire first installment is 55% of the previous year's total taxes, you can, in fact, pay any amount you wish.

Christmas and New Years Day Garbage Schedule Changes

Please note these important changes to the refuse and recycling schedule due to the Monday, December 25th (Christmas) and Monday, January 1st (New Year's Day) holidays.

There will be no refuse collection on Monday, December 25th and Monday, January 1st.  All city-collected refuse will be serviced Tuesday through Friday. Please keep your black and blue refuse and recycling carts accessible throughout the week of collection, not just on their regular day of collection.

Holiday Day Recycling Tips

After opening gifts, remember to recycle the wrapping paper - even the shiny stuff - but save and reuse the ribbons and bows.

Getting a new device this holiday season? Make sure your old phone or tablet does not get tossed in with the recycling.

Remember that paper cups, plastic lids and paper sleeves should be empty, clean and dry before tossing them into a recycling bin

All corrugated cardboard boxes are highly valuable material and should always be placed with your recycling; not with your trash. Just make sure to break-down boxes as flat as possible.

Remember that when it comes to toy packaging, both the cardboard and the plastic are recyclable, but they must be separated from one another. That includes the plastic window on the box of a doll or action figure.

The most common non-recyclables contaminating the recycling waste stream during the holiday season?   Bubble wrap, cellophane, string/rope, ribbons and bows, batteries, food, clothing, cell phones and Styrofoam and other forms of polystyrene foam. None of these is recyclable.

Recycle Your Christmas Tree

The City's Christmas Tree Recycling Program will run from Jan. 3-21, 2018, at Lincoln Park on Cannon Drive. Other locations are here. The trees collected will be shredded and turned into mulch that's used by the Park District and also made available to Chicago residents free of charge. Only natural trees are accepted, and because the trees will become mulch all tinsel, ornaments, lights and the stand must be removed.

Parking Passes Expire This Month

Green residential guest parking passes  expire Sunday, December 31, 2017. Green  passes  can be used overnight on New Year's Eve 2017.

New 2018 red residential guest parking passes are now available for purchase. Please visit the City Clerk's   website  for additional information.

Shared Sidewalk Program Opens January 9

The  Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is a very popular voluntary program where property owners share the cost of sidewalk repair with the City. Thousands of Chicagoans have taken advantage of the low cost, exceptional value, and ease of participation. The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program cost per square foot charged to property owners is well below what a private contractor would charge. Seniors and persons with disabilities may qualify for a further discounted rate.

Applications are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, based on availability of funds. The program reaches capacity quickly, so you are encouraged to apply early. Even if you applied for the program before, you must apply again in 2018 if you wish to be considered for the 2018 program. Applications will only be accepted  at  www.cityofchicago.org/311 or  by calling 311 . The property owner's contact information and the property address are required at the time of request.

Everyone in our office joins me in wishing you a very merry and safe Christmas. It has been a pleasure serving you this year.
