  Historical Highlight

Stephen Hempstead, known as “the father of the Presbyterian Church west of the Mississippi River,” came to the St. Louis area from New England in 1811.  He settled near St. Louis and took up farming.  Stressing the need for regular worship, Hempstead soon had his neighbors holding worship services in their homes, with the help of itinerant ministers.  In order to bring ministers to Missouri, he wrote letters to eastern missionary and Bible societies.

Salmon Giddings arrived in St. Louis in 1816 and organized the First Presbyterian Church there in 1817.  Hempstead was a charter member, elder and trustee of the church until his death.  He was buried in the family plot on his farm, which later became part of St. Louis’ Bellefontaine Cemetery.
