Pacific Presbyterian Church

The Pacific Presbyterian Church was organized on July 17, 1864 by the Presbytery of St. Louis. The Rev. J. F. Fenton was named pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Pacific City. Early services were held in homes, the old school house on the corner of Osage and Fourth Streets, and the old Masonic Hall. In 1867 the congregation acquired the old stone Presbyterian Church.

Stewardship News
Fall is rapidly approaching, the time when most congregations implement their annual stewardship campaign. Are you looking for a new stewardship approach or for new ideas that can be incorporated in the approach you are currently using?
Your Presbytery’s Stewardship and Missional Develop Team (a part of the Congregational Vibrancy Team) has developed, for your use, a Stewardship Resource Binder containing material you may find helpful in your campaign.  This Binder may be found on the Giddings-Lovejoy website in two different locations; under the Resources tab on the home page, or by visiting the Congregational Vibrancy Ministry Team page onto Stewardship. If you would like immediate access you can view it here.
The Binder provides a table of contents followed by a brief description of each document in the Binder.  The full documents follow.  You may print the entire thing or just the documents that seem of interest to you.  The Stewardship and Missional Development Team hopes you will find these documents helpful as you plan for a successful stewardship campaign

The national biennial conference, held September 26-29, 2017, of Presbyterians for Earth Care will focus on water issues at the nexus of faith, climate change and indigenous people. Caring for and celebrating the “waters of life” has always been central to Indigenous people of the world much as water rituals and images in scripture are central in the Christian tradition.

Dr. Barbara Rossing, an ordained Lutheran minister, and seminary professor, who is active in public theology in both the scholarly academy and the church, working on climate justice and the Bible. Historical Highlight
There are many interesting sites within the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy that reflect the rich history of our denomination – the structures, people, movements and events that helped to shape our nation.  As Missouri was a slave state, some of these sites were associated in some way with slavery.  Slaves may have helped to build the church or sat in a church’s second floor slave gallery.  Elijah Lovejoy, staunch abolitionist martyr, literally fought slavery to his death.  Several of the churches are some of the oldest Presbyterian churches west of the Mississippi River.
The Presbyterian Historical Society established The American Presbyterian & Reformed Historical Sites Registry.  Eight of the sites are located within the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy: Old Bonhomme Presbyterian Church (St. Louis County), Rock Hill Presbyterian Church (St. Louis County, demolished), Second Presbyterian Church (St. Louis), Bellevue Presbyterian Church (Caledonia), Bethel Presbyterian Church (Bay), First Presbyterian Church (Ironton), Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument and Grave Site (Alton, IL) and the Stephen Hempstead Grave Site (St. Louis).
The following articles should be of interest to historians: Ed Wicklein has written a piece on the bicentennial of the Presbyterian church in Missouri for a recent issue of the Presbyterian Historical Society’s newsletter; and check out the article, “Slavery and Schism,” in the Missouri Historical Review , Volume 111, No. 4, July, 2017.
