Interwoven Roots

by Rev. Dr. Craig Howard                                        Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy               Transitional Leader

I spent Sunday with the Edwardsville, First Presbyterian church family as they broke ground for their new church building. As the crowd huddled together on this bright sunny and windy day, the excitement bubbled over into spontaneous applause and expressions of joy throughout. The congregation has been meeting in a school the past several weeks as part of their transition from their 133-year-old former structure. Even moving to a new church building can be a mix of joy and sadness. One member of 45 years shared how she is still adjusting as she is releasing her memories and history from the old, while accepting with anticipation the new.

Opportunities for Growth
This Thursday...Give StL - Give to UKirk
UKirk is made possible by the generosity of the Presbytery, of congregations, and of individuals like YOU. Our annual activities budget is $20,865. Your giving makes the many aspects of our ministry possible - from weekly worship to the College Conference in Montreat, from small group Bible studies on campus to fall and spring break service retreats.   Hear from these students what UKirk means to them.
At the end of our second academic year, will you give in celebration of the ways God is moving through this ministry?
Give StL Day is next Thursday, May 11. Set up your donation today, or mark your calendars to give this week!   https://www.givestlday.org/ukirkstl

Volunteers Needed
Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery and its member congregations have been asked to provide volunteers to help with everything from onsite registration to golf cart shuttle drivers.
This is an incredible opportunity for us to extend the hand of fellowship to our brothers and sisters from across the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). As a token of our gratitude you're invited to attend Big Tent activities at no additional cost for the same day of your service. If you are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities please visit www.pcusa.org/bigtent

 First Presbyterian Church St. Louis
(University City)
Reverend Alexander Van Court, an early pastor of Central (First) Presbyterian Church in St. Louis, is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.  He died in the great cholera epidemic of 1849.  An image of the church is on his marker, which is in the form of an obelisk.  Reverend Van Court is buried in a chamber beneath the obelisk.
First Presbyterian, organized by Salmon Giddings in 1817, is the oldest Protestant congregation in continuous service west of the Mississippi River.  Famous abolitionist martyr, Elijah Lovejoy, joined the church in 1827.  During the Civil War, Reverend Henry Nelson took an anti-slavery stance from the pulpit, causing several slave owning families to quit the church.
